The reason why Willem Dafoe needed a double body on Antichrist could surprise you

The film by Lars von Trier in 2009 “Antichrist” is a game in the heart of Dour through the nauseating trenches of human depression. The first part of an unofficial depression trilogy (which also includes “Melancholia” from 2011 and “Nymphomaniac”), “Antichrist” in 2011 concerns a couple (Charlotte Gainsbourg and Willem Dafoe) who, while being engaged in a shower, Miss that their five -year -old son fell accidentally from their and deceased window. The death of their child throws “she” (the characters are not named) in a suicidal depression fight. “He,” being therapist, chooses to take him to their cabin in the woods for a therapeutic retreat.

The cabin in the woods more closely resembles the framework of “The Evil Dead” than a hot and wooded retirement. In this document, they both lose themselves because of misery, and it ends up exploding in torture and sexual violence which takes a very, very strong constitution to testify.

Because sex and sexuality are so omnipresent themes of “antichrist”, and because a large part of the drama comes from the sexual relationship of the two main ones, a large part of the nudity was required from the two actors. One of the first plans of “Antichrist” is a close -up of sexual penetration, turned in black and white and projected in super idle. The parts of the body in question, as we could suppose, did not belong to Gainsbourg or Dafoe, both used in double bodily. (It should be noted that Von Trier once supervised his own adult movie studio, which had its own ethical manifesto.) Dafoe in particular needs a double body throughout – and there is no distinguished way to say it – its penis was too large.

In an interview of 2009 with Dazed Digital, Dafoe spoke of demanding a double body, recognizing that his own body could have started the bad type of conversation on the film.

Willem Dafoe described his body because he could have appeared in “Antichrist” with a sweet candor:

“No, it’s not mine. Lars used a porn actor for these scenes. It was a good decision because, if it was me, then that’s all people would talk about. Obviously, Lars wants the characters to have genitals, but that would become a distraction:” Oh, they really had sex! “If he had asked me to do it, I don’t know what I would have said.”

Dafoe also underlined in the same interview as Dafoe and Gainsbourg are both married, and having non-simulated sex in front of the camera would perhaps raise sticky questions about loyalty.

Lars von Trier, as one might imagine, was much more impetuous when discussing the practical details of sex scenes in “Antichrist”, immediately making Dafoe to the anatomy of Dafoe. In an interview of 2009 with the Boston Phoenix, the filmmaker simply said it out loud:

“… he has a huge d ***. We had to take out these scenes from the film. We had a stand-in for him because we had to take out the scenes with his own d ***.

From there, Von Trier continued to elucidate, saying that the scene required a double body “because Will was too large”. The amused interviewer asked if he was too big to adapt on the big screen. “No,” Clarifia von Trier. “Too big because everyone has become very confused when they saw it.” It was too big, it seems, to integrate into human imagination.

Willem Dafoe is easily one of the best actors of his generation, skillfully playing complex, dark and intense characters with humanity and the balance. His collaborations with director Abel Ferrara are also awarded a cinematographic relationship that an actor had with a director. Despite this, discussions on his genitals continued to circulate, leading to an interview with Simon Hattenstone in which he was asked if he had the greatest penis in Hollywood. “I no longer really work in Hollywood,” replied Coyly Dafoe (via The Guardian).

In a 2018 interview with IMDB, Dafoe revealed that his naked scene in Martin Scorsese’s film in 1988 “The Last Temptation of Christ” was also embarrassing to film. In the inevitable crucifixion sequence of this film, Christ (Dafoe) is naked on the cross. Unlike the common Roman Catholic representation, however, it is crucified with its knees leaning on the side in the film by Scorsese, requiring certain special physical arrangements.

“It took a lot [in a crucified position]. I’m also naked. They shoot a very wide shot, and I am like that for a while. “”

But then, a part of the discovery body became visible. With his linked hands, it was up to others to hide the incriminated part:

“There are only all these Roman stuntmen, real guys macho. And they say to themselves:” I don’t touch this thing. “Finally, a very soft guy in the costume service obtains a small scale and climb up up and throw it, and we were ready to leave.”

The Dafoe unit has become so notorious, and its appearance in “antichrist” so memorable, that rocky training in Wyoming – notable for its escalation – was even nicknamed the blood penis of Willem Dafoe.
