First East Yorkshire Endometriosis Support Center to open

A charity is to open the first center in the region to support women with endometriosis.

The condition means that the tissues, similar to the mucous membrane of the uterus, develop elsewhere in the body, including the ovaries, the basin, the bladder and the intestine.

It can cause extreme pain, fatigue, heavy periods and can make pregnancy difficult.

Helen Brewster, co-founder of Hull and East Yorkshire Endo, said the diagnosis can take years.

“This affects about one in ten women and those who have been assigned to birth, but it is quite misunderstood and in diagnosed state,” she said.

“As a rule, a patient would probably be diagnosed with appendicitis or SCI first.”

Brewster said that people can wait up to eight years for a diagnosis because it required laparoscopy, a lock surgery procedure, to confirm the condition.

“We have a lot of service users who come to us and they have very good experiences, really positive and we have everything like saying that they have had negative experience,” she said.

The new center of the Highlands Health Center in Bransholme, Hull, will offer a range of services.

It includes writing letters to general practitioners and other medical workers, as well as to help access the benefits.

“We are not medically trained, so we do not prescribe drugs or something like that,” said Brewster.

“We simply recommend them on what exists, what are their options.

“Because sometimes we get a lot of people and the GP meetings may only be 10 minutes and they feel like they haven’t discussed everything with them, they don’t have all the answers they needed.”

The center will hold an open day on October 10. After that, people can make an appointment with more information on the Heyendo website.
