On Wednesday, PBS chief Paula Kerger said that President Donald Trump’s push to undo public broadcasters would spend the end for a number of local information stations.
Kerger, in an interview with Katie Couric, deplored that “there are stations that go from the air” to rural areas if the president succeeds, without projecting a specific number of PBS member stations which would cease to operate.
“I think we are going to find a means, through digital, to make sure that there is PBS content,” said Kerger. “But there will be no one in the community that creates local content. There will be no room for people to meet. ”
She added: “Once the broadcast licenses have disappeared, they left. It is a finite commodity. The stations would probably be sold and it will be the end.”
Trump signed a decree of May 1 calling at the end of the subsidy of PBS and NPR taxpayers, via the public dissemination company.
“Unlike 1967, when the CPB was created, the media landscape is now filled with abundant, diverse and innovative new options,” the order said. “Government funding of information media in this environment is not only exceeded and useless but corrosive to the appearance of journalistic independence.”
The president also described NPR and PBS “radical monsters” that Republicans must finance in recent publications on social networks.
However, Trump achieves his goal is to be determined. The congress has already allocated $ 535 million to public broadcasters this exercise, and it faces a CPB trial on a related issue – its decision to dismiss three of its board of directors.
