The new benchmark in Space Opera TV

The modern epic of Apple TV+ Foundation is a far better sci-fi TV show than almost any other. Star Wars show so far. There were many Star Wars shows over the years, Ewoks in 1984 until Star Wars: The Clone Wars. From The Mandalorian debuted in 2019, the franchise has shown renewed interest in telling the story of the galaxy far, far away in a serialized format, with new shows like Ahsoka, Skeleton crewand still others join the ranks.

But despite the best efforts of Disney and Lucasfilm, Star Wars Television has long been overshadowed by other science fiction shows. The list of best sci-fi shows of all time includes only one episode of Star Warsafter all. Now Apple TV+ Foundationwhich just finished its third season this year, became the perfect tool to explain why Star WarsTelevision efforts often fail.

The Apple TV Foundation has become the best Space Opera on television

With the end of Foundation season 3, it’s safe to say that it’s now the best space opera on television. The title was held by The extentalthough that ended in 2022. Based on the books by legendary science fiction author Isaac Asimov, Foundation presents a massive and extremely complex future world, full of intrigue, politics, fascinating sci-fi concepts and a great story. In short, Foundation it’s everything a space opera is supposed to be.

Foundation season 3 really helped the series earn this distinction. The introduction of the mule and all the complications the villain brought with him raised both the stakes and the twisty, fascinating plot of the series. NOW, Foundation proved worthy of the high bar set by Asimov and serves as an example of how to turn a great sci-fi epic into a television show.

FoundationThe massive success of as a space opera television show also highlights the number of Star Wars“Entries in the subgenre have fallen flat. Such Star Wars shows, like Ahsoka, Obi-Wan Kenobi, The Book of Boba Fettand even The Mandalorian simply pales in comparison to Foundation. None of them have the scope, complexity or intrigue that make Foundation such a grand space opera. Star Wars the shows seem small in comparison.

Most of Star Wars‘relative smallness compared to Foundation is intentional. These shows exist separately from the main Star Wars the Skywalker films and saga. Star Wars movies, not shows, are meant to be in-depth explorations of a vast and vibrant galaxy. The shows follow less popular, less powerful characters who go on more personal journeys. Boba Fett’s quest for redemption, for example, simply cannot compare to the galaxy-wide stakes. Foundation.

Most Star Wars shows just can’t compare to Foundationbut there is one very notable exception: Andor. Unlike the rest of the Star Wars shows, Andor gets a serialized space opera. It tells the story of the Rebellion and all the work and sacrifice that went into overthrowing the Empire. There are countless characters who all have important roles to play, all are mired in moral grayness, and this is the most complex. Star Wars it’s been since The Empire Strikes Back.

Andor was the first and (so far) only time a Star Wars The show has truly earned the space opera designation. This is a beautifully written, acted and produced show from top to bottom. Everything there is to love Foundation is present in Andor. Actually, Andor is undoubtedly better than Foundationalthough it ended this year. However, if Star Wars always wants to put on a show as good as Andor again, it would be good to follow Foundationhe is the leader.
