James Cameron’s career is filled with some of the best casting pieces in modern cinematographic history. Whether it is Arnold Schwarzenegger and Robert Patrick as T-800 and T-1000 in the franchise “Terminator”, launches Henriksen in “Aliens”, or the whole whole of “Titanic” (but particularly its support distribution), Cameron’s films have contributed to launch and cite careers and faces in public conscience.
Regarding Cameron’s “avatar” franchise, however, it is difficult not to see at “What Ifs”. After all, Cameron looked at names like Jake Gyllenhaal to play Jake Sully at some point before Gyllenhaal (like Matt Damon) refused the role and a lot of money.
Another person who refused the chance to visit Pandora is the star of “weapons” Josh Brolin. It was reported a few years ago that Brolin angry Cameron when he refused a role in “Avatar”, leading to Cameron calling the names of Bruin. It was presumed that the offer should appear in the “avatar” consequences, with speculation according to which he was originally going to be the villain in the consequences before Cameron brought back the colonel Miles Quarit of Stephen Lang as a substitute. Now, however, we know the real story, and that always involves Lang.
Appearing on the Podcast Happy Sad Confused, Brolin revealed that he had in fact refused a role in the first “avatar” rather than on the consequences. He initially offered the role of Miles Quaritch before Lang was played in the role. “I do not want to take a year and a half and do it,” said Brolin about his reasoning so as not to play the role, being extremely generous with the timing, given the duration of these films without even counting the consequences. Brolin compares his rejection of “avatar” in favor of playing Thanos in two Marvel films saying that Thanos was more an outsider coming a little, rather than being a large part of the project, a smaller role than the main villain (which would prove to be the main antagonist three films and count).
However, Brolin does not hold a grudge. “It was Stephen Lang, whom I knew, and I was very happy for him,” said Brolin. “It is incredible in it. So it happened exactly like it should be.”
Would Josh Brolin be a good villain in Avatar?
Now, Brolin is not the only person to have been almost interpreted as Colonel Quarritch in “Avatar”, as Cameron originally thought of Michael Biehn in the early stages of development to play the villain. Unfortunately, when Cameron decided to launch Sigourney Weaver in the film as Dr. Grace Augustine, the filmmaker decided that a double “aliens” meeting in important roles would be too distracting.
As for Brolin, it is difficult not to see how perfect it would have been for the role. Lang does a good job, of course, but Brolin has a very different prevalence on the screen, a gravity which is more than simply as a buff, which would have made Quaritch a very different type of bad guy. Brolin could have made fourth nightmare stuff, and its version of Quaritch – when it is transformed into an avatar na’vi – could have been a fascinating counterpart for Jake Sully.
Unfortunately, things were not supposed to be. Hollywood is full of alternating sites and dimensions with very different molded pieces. Brolin himself is no stranger to this, having missed Batman in the universe of Zack Snyder, and also refused the main role in “Birdman” by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, a role that ultimately gave Michael Keaton an appointment to the Oscars.
