Channing Tatum feels that Marvel needs to do something to make Gambit succeed

In Shawn Levy’s “Deadpool & Wolverine” superheroes of “The Two Title Heroes (Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman) are found in a parallel universe populated only with super fed Castoffs and costumed misdeeds that do not belong to the same universe as most of the most famous Marvel film. Sure, most of the outsets they meet are unpopular characters shot down from the last 20 years of superhero cinema. Elektra de “Daredevil” from 2003 and the character’s spin-off film in 2005. The film is a little more than a fashion show, designed specifically for those who have been reading superhero websites for several decades.

In an oblique reference, Channing Tatum appears as Gambit, one of the most notable mutants of the “X-Men” franchise. Gambit is a fun cajun that can affect inanimate objects and make them explosive by instilling them with kinetic energy. Its appearance in “Deadpool & Wolverine” was a glorified reference to a “Gambit” feature film which has never been directed. As early as 2009, Tatum wanted to play Gambit, and in 2014, it was announced that “Gambit” was going ahead with Tatum attached to Star. This version has gone through an intense development process, however, passing through the hands of several directors (Edgar Wright is among them) before dying entirely. In other words, the role of Tatum in “Deadpool & Wolverine” was a wink for all the people who wanted to see the actor play the character.

It is not the end either. Thanks to the success of this film, Tatum will return as Gambit in the next Mega-Superhero Tentpole “Avengers: Doomsday”. Addressing Variety, the actor said that his “singular concentration” was currently on reading gambit as much as possible in the film. He also said that he knew the secret so that Gambit works: the character, a notorious party boy, needs a moment when he can be serious.

It should also be noted that Tatum was also prepared to codirigate “Gambit” because it was entirely invested in the project. It was only when Disney bought Fox’s Film and TV Library that it all started to collapse, with Disney absorption of X-Men properties belonging to Fox killing for good effort. It took a little intelligent like Reynolds to make Tatum like Gambit a reality and renew the interest to play the mutant. In the past, Tatum said it had been relieved that things worked in this way, because his own vision for “Gambit” was not all that could have been. As he pointed out to Variety, “the universe saved us. […] We would have failed so hard. “”

Tatum is also well aware that Gambit was presented comically in “Deadpool & Wolverine”, being supported with an impenetrable cajun accent. He wanted to assure the readers of Variety that his appearance “doomsday” will be less fanciful and easier to understand. Indeed, Tatum believes that the best way to make Gambit an effective character is to give him a moment when he can drop his character of “partycovered” and himself to fight a villain. In his own words:

“I’m not going to go a lot Cajun. [The directors] want things to be funny, but they don’t want to go complete “Deadpool”. They want to keep the drama and keep it tight. When Gambit becomes serious – when he drops the Mardi Gras mask – things TO DO matter.”

The real role of Gambit in “Doomsday”, or how the character will flee his personal parallel universe, has not yet been revealed before the planned release of the film on December 18, 2026. In the meantime, Tatum can be seen in the comedy of “roofman” biographical crime, which is due in theaters on October 10, 2025.
