After the assassination of Charlie Kirk, the conservative movement accelerated his war against trans people. And too many centrist democrats have maintained their trans denigration.

The alleged murderer of Charlie Kirk, Tyler Robinson, is a CIS man. But that did not prevent the right from grasping early disinformation and the news that he could have been in relation to his trans -climbing roommate of his war of extermination against trans people.
To say that the law wants to exterminate trans people is not a hyperbole. Republican fanaticism has fueled a range of initiatives designed to drive people out of public life. But the conservatives are not content to transform trans people into fourth class citizens. They want the public to consider them as enemies of the state – as mental savages that draw the country in the moral abyss. The endless armed violence of America has become a useful tool in this effort. Right commentators push the idea that trans people are “subject to violence” and responsible for a huge proportion of mass fire. Kirk, who formerly called trans people “a thrilling adult for God”, flirted with this idea himself; At the time of his murder, he had just finished telling someone that “too” mass shooters were trans. Robinson’s CIS identity – and full cooperation of his roommate with the government – has done nothing to brake this story.
This fascist anti-trans movement is, of course, based on lies. Minnesota Star TribuneCiting statistics from the archives of armed violence and the prevention project of violence, reported in August that “less than 0.1% of mass shooting suspects in the last decade identified as transgender” and that 98% of shooters were cisgenres men.
Never mind. Last week, Laura Loomer, one of the most influential members of the far right, said: “Trans are a national security threat. Their movement must be classified as a terrorist organization immediately! ” Ronny Jackson, the member of the Republican Congress and former White House doctor, made Newsmax to label the “domestic terrorists” of trans people who were “raised by the left” to do evil and should be institutionalized en masse. Donald Trump Jr. led a Twitter survey to ask if “Tranifa” was the “biggest national terrorist threat to America”. (“No” was not an option.)
Current number
Even more disturbing, investigative journalist Ken Klippenstein reported that the FBI discussed the opportunity to treat trans suspects as “violent nihilist extremists”. The Heritage Foundation, whose Project 2025 initiative shaped a large part of the second term Trump, went even further, calling on the FBI to create a criminal category called “violent extremism inspired by transgender ideology”.
This moment requires solidarity with trans people. But it also requires a reflection on how we have arrived in such a terrifying place. And it is not only the conservatives who need to examine their conscience at the moment. Politicians, activists and centrist media institutions have helped to lay the foundations for the aggression of the right. Unfortunately, the signs of such reflection are rare.
It is not that centrists have engaged in the same Nazi style rhetoric as the conservatives. But anti-Trans hysteria that has swept the United States in recent years would never have found so much purchase without the participation of elite liberal political institutions and media. The New York Times And The Atlantic have published a story after history on the supposed dangers of affirmative care, in particular for minors, and impatient fears concerning the participation of trans people in sports. These alarmist campaigns can be dressed in more respectable clothing than a diatribe of Fox News, but they are also based on myth.
Transphobes exploited this coverage – after all, if “even the liberal New York Times” was concerned, there must be something going on, right? Times The coverage was used by a wide range of politicians, lawyers and courts to justify anti-trans policies; Judge of the Supreme Court Clarence Thomas quoted the newspaper seven times in his opinion in United States against SkrmettiOne of the most important attacks on trans rights in recent memory.

The effect of this crusade was predictable: trans rights, which had seemed to be in the ascendant, became polarized – ranging from experts and politicians, including the Democrats, to then emphasize this polarization as a sign of the supposed extremism of the movement. Many centrists then made Trans scapegoats for the presidential victory in 2024 of Trump.
These days, it seems that no week spends without eminent democrats to denigrate trans people – despite the Trump administration placing an increasingly large target on their backs. California Governor Gavin Newsom, considered a leading potential pretender during the 2028 presidential election, sadly declared in a podcast with Kirk that he was “deeply unfair” for women and girls Trans to compete with women and girls of CIS in sport. The former mayor of Chicago, Rahm Emanuel, whose name is also in mixing 2028, completely rejected the idea of trans identity in a conversation with Megyn Kelly, saying: “Can a man become a woman? Uh, no. “
The post-Kirk wave has not stopped this tide. Last week saw the launch of the Searchlight Institute, a new democratic reflection group led by former assistant John Fetterman Adam Jentleson. (Of course, the public introduction of the group took the form of a splashing profile in the Times.) Even if the good increase in his eliminationist campaign, Jentleson and his projectors’ co -founders identified trans rights as a key problem for Democrats. The vice-president of research, Tré Easton, responded on Twitter to a question on the question of whether the Democrats should support anti-abortion candidates, wrote: “Firearms, immigration, trans people in sport would probably have been better for this experience of particular thought.”
Jentleson demanded in an interview with Traffic lights That he was actually trying to help trans people, saying: “People who throw trans people under the bus are those who insist that Democrats take up maximalist positions, even if that makes them lose elections to the Republicans who then tear these rights.”
The involvement here seems to be that democrats can transform a large dial which says “transphobia” at an ideal level – that there is an ideal place of anti -trans discrimination that everyone can be satisfied with. (Everyone, probably, except trans people themselves.) But the events of the past year should have been based on this idea. Democrats and centrists to have Discolving themselves trans people – in fact, democratic personalities like Chuck Schumer will barely say the word “trans” – and the only forces that have benefited are the forces of anti -trans fascism. You can’t just play this kind of games with people’s life.
Hopefully, one day there will be one day on the decision of so many democrats to help the persecution of one of the most marginalized groups in America. But that will not help trans people at the moment. The only thing that goes is the rest of us, refusing to join this elite extermination war – and demanding that our politicians and media institutions do the same.
Don’t let JD vance silence our independent journalism
On September 15, vice-president JD Vance attacked The nation by hosting The Charlie Kirk Show.
In a clip given millions of times, Vance has chosen The nation In a whistling dog to his far -right disciples. As you would expect, a torrent of abuse followed.
Throughout our 160 years of publication of fierce and independent journalism, we worked with the conviction that dissent is the highest form of patriotism. We were criticized by democratic and republican office holders – and we are delighted that the White House is reading The nation. As long as Vance is free to criticize us and we are free to criticize it, the American experience will continue as it should.
To correct the file on the false allegations of Vance on the source of our funding: The nation is proudly supported by readers by progressives like you who support independent journalism and will not be intimidated by those in power.
Officials of the Vance and Trump administration also established their plans for general repression against progressive groups. Instead of calling for national healing, the administration uses Kirk’s death as a pretext for a concerted attack on Trump’s enemies on the left.
Now we know The nation is at the front and center of their mind.
Your support today will make our critical work possible in the months and years to come. If you believe in the right of the first amendment to maintain a free and independent press, please make a donation today.
With gratitude,
