NFL fined Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones $250,000 after he was seen on video giving the middle finger to fans at MetLife Stadium on Sunday.
During the Cowboys’ game against the New York Jets, several fans recorded Jones appearing to interact with opposing fans in the owner’s suite. In the middle of this interaction, Jones raised his middle finger before pointing and waving at someone else. At the time of the incident, the Cowboys were in the midst of a blowout victory, and the gesture was widely seen as Jones simply talking down the opposition.
The next day on Dallas radio station 105.3 The fanJones clarified that he actually didn’t want to want to do that. Jones explained that there was a bunch of Cowboys fans underneath the suite, and he wanted to interact with them. When he went to their gesture, however, he “inadvertently” got the middle finger. Jones called the move “unfortunate” and claimed he wanted to give the Cowboys faithful a boost.
What was also unfortunate was the cost of this action. According to ESPN Adam Schetthe league decided Tuesday to bribe Jones a quarter of a million dollars.
As noted in a report from Todd ArcherJones has the right to appeal the fine.
