The historical connection leads to a partnership between Poplar and Papua New Guinea

A new Sister City partnership has been created between Poplar, Wisconsin and Madang, Papua Nouvelle-Guinée.

It all started in 2024, when the Historic Center for Veterans of Richard I. Bong joined forces with Pacific Wrecks, locating the wreck of Major Bong’s Margarine, His P-38 Lightning plane. He was hidden in the Jungles of Papua New Guinea for more than eight decades.

With the discovery of the wreckage, a new connection has been formed between the Center and the Pacific Nation, resulting in coordinated cultural awareness efforts with the US State Department and the International Sister Cities.

Representatives of the Bong Center and Sister Cities International made the trip to Madang in July 2025 to officially establish the partnership.
