The grandson of the Pittsburgh Steelers founder, Art Rooney, Matthew Rooney dies at East Hampton Home

Matthew Rooney, the grandson of the legendary Pittsburgh Steelers, Art Rooney, died on Friday in Hamptons, the team confirmed. He was 51 years old.

“The Rooney family mourns the loss of Matthew,” said a Steelers spokesman in a press release.

A cause of death has not been revealed.

Rooney was born in Meadowbrook, Pennsylvania, on November 11, 1973 by Joann Wallace Rooney and John J. Rooney, a minority shareholder of the Steelers until he sends a majority of his participation of 16% in 2009.

Matthew Rooney graduated from Nyu with a baccalaureate in Arts before winning his master’s degree at Columbia University.

The writer, artist and lovers of the ballet and the opera was known by his family in an online NECR.

He divided the time living in New York and Los Angeles before settling in Brooklyn Heights and East Hampton.

We remember Rooney for his “spirit, charm and love of fashion” which made him “one of the last real dandies of life and an authentic Bob Viviant”, said the family.

Rooney was vice-president of the donor branch of the New York City Ballet allegro circle and was a member of the board of directors of the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

The position contacted the Metropolitan Opera.

“I was saddened to hear about the death of Matthew Rooney. I did not know him well, but he was always a kind and familiar face in the ballet – someone who had a particular way to make others feel welcome and celebrated,” said fashion designer Joshua Kamei in an Instagram post.

He is survived by his mother, four older brothers and sisters, 15 nieces and nephews and 18 great nieces and nephews.

The Rooney family has had the emblematic NFL franchise since Art Rooney guided the team in the League in 1933.

Patriarch Rooney was president and owner of the team until his death in 1988.

The son of art Rooney, Dan, was appointed president of the team in 1975 and held the post until his death in 2002.

The team is now headed by the owner and president Art Rooney II, the son of Dan and the cousin of Matthew.

Private funerals and burial will take place for Matthew Rooney on August 21 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
