1 dead, 8 injured in attack in Taipei after use of smoke grenade

TAIPEI – One person died and eight others were injured after a man threw a smoke grenade at a Taipei subway station and then brandished a knife at passers-by in a nearby shopping district, local media reported Friday.
Following the grenade incident, a man in his 50s was taken to hospital after suffering cardiac arrest and was later pronounced dead, Taiwan’s Central News Agency reported.
The attacker allegedly threw a smoke grenade near an exit of Taipei Main Station on the MRT system around 5:30 p.m., local media reported. Smoke was seen drifting onto the station platforms.
The man then headed north and attacked people at a department store near Zhongshan MRT station, according to the agency. He then jumped to his death.
