The final of season 8 of Rick and Morty has just changed the show (and Rick) forever

Publisher’s note: The following contains spoilers for Rick and Morty season 8 Episode 10.

The animated series of absurd science fiction Rick and Morty I just finished season 8 in a way of memory. Rick and Morty Season 8, episode 10, “Hot Rick”, sees Rick (Ian Cardoni) finally reconciling with the loss of his wife, Diane (Kari Wahlgren), in the most rick as possible – By removing all her memories from her. The Omega apparatus, created by Rick Prime in season 7, episode 5, “UNMORTROCEN”, was invented with the intention of destroying the existence of Diane in each universe, which has permanently led to the memory of it in the mind of Rick and Beth (Sarah Chalke). Rick does this to be more emotionally open and potentially to entertain the possibility of a real relationship after 40 years of mourning. The death of Rick’s wife seemed to be the engine of all her actions in the past, but this season has focused on her connection with her family and finally left her tortured luggage.

Memories retaliate in the final of season 8 of “Rick and Morty”

All of this came from the memory that Rick infiltrated Jerry’s brain when they both changed mind in season 7, episode 2, “The Jerrick Trap”, with Memory Rick now creating a version of Rick who has always been a father and a grandfather who liked inside the memories of Jerry. Rick tries his version of moving on to something else as a way to respect this almost impossible standard as a father, and in addition, agrees to attend a family event with his recent connection, Buganne, something that we have never seen Rick try before. Memory Rick infiltrates Beth’s mind, forming a young version of his subconscious so that they can save Diane from the memory prison that placed her, and finally come together. This invasion of memory leads Beth to question his realityDriving it in a frenzy, pushed to protect this memory version of her family by all the necessary means, in particular by accidentally killing Space Beth. In other words, until Rick activates his robotic spine, bringing her back to life.

With the existence of the memory versions of his parents at stake, Beth, as well as countless versions of his subconscious, concludes that the only way their family can stay together is so Beth committed suicide. After Rick’s new state of mind transformed his appointment into a ritual fight to death because he is too open, He comes back to save the day by simply being there for Beth as a father for once. Rick even comforts Beth, telling him that memories are always asymmetrical versions of reality, and his real mother loved him so much that she would never have agreed to divert her memories to save a version reminds of herself. It is easy to forget that this Beth was Rick Prime’s daughter, and was raised by Diane from her reality when Rick Prime abandoned his family. The Rick that the public followed for everyone Rick and Morty lost her Beth and Diane in the hands of Rick Prime, and have chosen this version of Beth to hangAs Beth is the only thing that he can never really give up.

“He is the steel man, not the man of conversation.”

Rick’s relationship with Beth has always been complicated, which is proven by the creation of Space Beth, giving Beth the possibility of living the life of freedom and adventure that she has always sought, while the other Beth remains at home to continue her normal life. Rick came with this solution because of his inability to let Beth have the choice to stay with something else, so he created a outline solution and ensured that he did not know what version of Beth is the clone, so that he could avoid the responsibility of easily with the clone if the situation became too extinct. But the final of season 8 of Rick and Morty presented a really changed rick, the one who finally accepts the responsibility of his actions.

When Rick extracts both Rick and Diane memory and has the ability to delete them forever, he allows them to live in their own isolated reality, giving them a happy ending, Explore a new side of Rick – one with real empathy. Throughout most Rick and MortyRick is always seen minimizing his emotions, a common archetype for most super-genius with the power to create inventions that transcend space and time, but the series has slowly shown the cracks in Rick’s emotional armor. The largest crack in this armor has always been Diane. Now that she has been completely erased from her mind, and he is self -proclaimed “more emotionally open”, it is perfectly logical that he spared the last piece remaining of the love of his life to exist in a world with a version of him, even if they are both sensitive memories. Rick Keeping Memory Rick and Diane alive also leave the very great possibility that the two come back later on the line, a current event that the creator of Rick and Morty,, And Harmonlikes to use.

Season 8 of Rick and Morty I felt like a return to form for the series as a whole, focusing on small unique adventures instead of massive interconnected narration like season 7. However, season 8 relied on things introduced during the previous seasons and improved them while increasing the emotional anty from the character’s point of view, like any big television show should do it. In Rick and Morty Season 8, Episode 5, “Cryo Death A Rickver”, Rick reveals a delicate part of his childhood in Morty (Harry called), declaring that he had a lonely childhood and that he always wanted his parents’ love, which is why he hung on to have parents in the episode. Season 8, episode 6, “The Curicksous Case of Bethjamin Button”, focused on the two versions of Beth because they use Space Beth technology to get their childhood. When the two get the upper hand on Rick, he gets up with pride tears, which is a very rare display of Rick’s pure emotion. This shows how the series continues to recontextualize Rick’s emotionsUnlocking different sides of the main character closed while the show continues to progress.
