California Governor Gavin Newsom has loved sending lists on social networks in recent months, which represents where his condition is on a number of questions. The “fourth economy of the world”, “number one in manufacturing”, number one in agriculture “, and so on – all impressive figures, of course.
What he would like to avoid, however, is the fact that the Golden State is tied with Louisiana for another title: number one in poverty.
A new report published this week by the California Budget and Policy Center, a Sacramento based reflection group, revealed that 7 million residents in California, or 17.7% of the population, lived in poverty last year.
California is tied with Louisiana for the highest poverty rate of any US state in 2024, according to the analysis of the Data Group on data from the Office of the American Census.
When you dive deeper into this seven million number, the magnitude becomes even more astounding:
The analysis, adjusted for factors such as family size and local housing costs, reveals that these 7 million Californians did not have the resources to meet their basic needs. The number of Californians living in poverty is roughly equivalent to the Los Angeles populations, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco Combined.

The poverty rate was in fact at a historic pace in 2021, while Newsom and the single legislative assembly decided to do? Blow the big open budget and give billions for health care for illegal foreigners, billions of others for completely ineffective homeless policies, and God knows what else.
