The end of Shane and Ilya’s cabin is pure indulgent television

Creator Jacob Tierney offers an indulgent ending to the story of Shane Hollander and Ilya Rosanov in Passionate rivalry. It’s barely been a month since the original Crave series landed on HBO Max and premiered simultaneously, and yet there’s no denying that the series has become one of, if not the biggest, surprises on television this year. Based on the book of the same name by Rachel Reid, Passionate rivalry has a simple story: great professional hockey rivals find themselves in a secret romance that lasts several years.
On the heels of the emotional roller coaster of Rivalry of radiatorsIn the penultimate episode of, the finale settles into a more leisurely pace than anything else. Aptly titled “The Cottage,” the 51-minute release takes place primarily in Shane’s Ottawa home, which was previously teased by a narrative documentary. The couple uses the time to sort through their feelings and ultimately give viewers the best payoff after five episodes of push and pull.
Heated Rivalry Episode 6 is indulgent television at its best
The events of Passionate rivalry take place over a few days, without major time jumps like previous outings. This allows the show to settle into a more even rhythm as it reunites Shane and Ilya in Ottawa. The next hour then becomes indulgent television, as it focuses solely on them having the time of their lives in the cabin. This is not to say that “The Cottage” is pure joy. There are portions that are bittersweet, and some of them are downright heartbreaking, but they contain no frenetic energy.
Although it essentially loses the element of tension that comes with stealthy entry and exit, “The Cottage” retains its emotional intensity with quieter moments. Similar to how Tierney withdrew from intimate scenes in Episode 5, it features almost no steamy moments, focusing on Shane and Ilya being more domesticated than anything else. In this outing, Tierney rewards viewers with the relationship payoff he deserves after weeks of building up. Shane and Ilya being playful, eating burgers, lounging on the couch aren’t unforgettable moments, but they are some of the most enjoyable moments of the series because it’s new to them and to the viewers.
Until the very end, Passionate rivalry still doesn’t deviate much from its source. The series adapts major beats from Shane and Ilya’s time at the cabin, but makes a few changes to fit the overall feel of the episode. As an example, the marriage conversation with Svetlana is more playful in the novel, but it is more serious in the series and ends up being the start of a series of emotional scenes that captivate how serious this matter has become for both of them.
Heated Rivalry Episode 6 ends the first chapter of Shane and Ilya’s romance at the perfect time
Another notable change from the book comes later, when Tierney includes a one-on-one conversation between Shane and his mother, Yuna. The honest discussion adds weight to the internal turmoil he feels about his sexuality. While David is a staple in Shane’s set Passionate rivalry so far, it’s clear that his bond with Yuna is special. So seeing your people accept what is happening in solidarity is a welcome diversion.
Interestingly, Passionate rivalry Season 1 ends on a different note than Rachel Reid’s book. This means that the series ends earlier than in print, leaving some scenes that have yet to be adapted for the small screen. Granted, this can be a divisive creative choice, but in the grand scheme of things, especially with Passionate rivalry With season 2 on the horizon, this gives Tierney the perfect starting point for what’s next for them.
Ending the series on a high note after Shane and Ilya’s conversation with Yuna and David cuts the story off at a point where all the main storylines have been addressed. Whether Tierney adapts the rest of Reid’s first book or jumps straight into the events of The long game is uncertain at this stage. However, whatever the specific case, Passionate rivalry always ends satisfactorily, and Hollywood knows that’s a rare feat these days.
