History first! Maharashtra’s striker becomes the very first replacement of BCCI “serious injury” in the Duleep trophy
In the recently concluded match between the western area and the central area of the 2025 DULEEP Trophy, the newly introduced “serious injury” replacement rule was used by the west side of the west area as a counter and opening paste, Harvik Desai, missed the second round due to a quadriceps injury.
The cricket game is not known for replacement of mid-match injuries, except for the replacement fields which can take the ground to replace any injured player, but cannot adopt a role of striker or bowling.
However, recent incidents, including Rishabh Pant and the injuries of Chris Woakes in Manchester and Oval tests, forced the cricket bodies to think the opposite.

Pant suffered a massive injury when his foot was fractured by the blow, but still had to go out for the bat for India, because his replacement, Dhruv Jurel, could not play any role with the bat for the game.
What is BCCI’s “serious injury” rule in domestic cricket?
The BCCI believes in politics that charity begins at home, and they therefore made the first step to mark a change in the BCCI rules for injury replacements. The BCCI has introduced the replacement rule for “serious injuries”, which has guidelines for several days for the next national season of 2025-2026.
According to the rule, a substitute player can take the ground when a player in the XI undergoes a serious external injury during an in progress match. THE Injuries must occur on the ground and may include a fracture, a deep cup or a dislocation that forces the player of the game.
After such an incident, the decision will be made by field referees alongside the match referee and the team doctor. Consequently, the coach or the team manager can then offer an official request for a replacement player.
However, no rule of this type has been specified for white ball cricket.
Saurabh Nawale becomes the first striker to be written under the new role
Now, the player who turned out to be the very first player to have been roped as a replacement player under the new rule established by the BCCI is the MAHARASHTRA SAURABH NAWALE striker.
The incident took place in the confrontation in the semi-finals of the Duleep 2025 trophy between the central area and the western area, where the opening of the western area, Harvik Desai, was excluded with a quadriceps injury, which prompted the referees to allow the Nawale substitute to take the ground as a replacement.
Nawale, however, could not take advantage of this opportunity, because it was cleaned for only 9 points by Saransh Jain, derogatory. West Zone was finally able to manage only 216/8 during its second rounds while the two players of the team shake hands, and the central zone qualified for the final of the Duleep 2025 trophy.
