The director of heads of state breaks down the Air Force One Scene

“Chefs of State”, now streaming on Prime Video, is an incredibly entertaining summer movies blockbuster that you can watch in the comfort of your living room. He features John Cena, as a former action hero who became president of the United States, and Idris Elba, as a suffocating Prime Minister, who are forced to come together and go on an adventure, even if they do not love each other much.
The film returns to the comments of smooth action and produced in the studio from the 1980s and 1990s, and offers hard sets in a PG-13 setting that the whole family can appreciate. (He also has a cast of support for a killer who includes Jack Quaid, Priyanka Chopra, Stephen Root, Carla Gugino and a Paddy de Rine considered the big bad guy.) It is a hua. And proof that you don’t have to leave your home for one of the best summer films of the year.
A large part of what makes the “heads of state” so pleasant, it is the direction of Ilya Naïsuller, who previously made “Hardcore Henry” and “Person”. He knows how to stage pieces of muscular and exciting sets, while never pushing things far. An excellent example of Naïller’s approach is a sequence, from the start, where Cena and Elba must flee an air force that has been attacked.
When Naïsuller entered the project, he modified it significantly – he wondered if the film could be an action comedy instead of an action thriller. Cena went from an ex-soldier to fight against the battle to a former actual action movie star. (Naïsuller said that he considered the film as “planes, trains and cars” with firearms.) And this tweak, far from a simple action film, helped inform the sequence of the Air Force One in particular.
“The interest was, the guys are not heroic in this particular sequence. They are directed. So they behave as I would behave if I was on this plane – I would be terrified,” said Naïsuller. The only heroic things they do is check the people on the plane and ask them if they can double on the parachutes to see if they could save more people. “Everything else, there is pure terror in their eyes, which, I think, is simply more fun than having two guys who say:” We had that “. They will get there, but they start the hero’s journey as people who are not entirely able to be the protectors you expect. “”
Naïsuller said that he storyboarding religious things and it took him five months for everything for everything for “the heads of state”. On the other hand, with the same people, it took him a month and a half to do the storyboards for “person”. The sequence of the Air Force One was reintegrated 10 times – there were versions which more strongly involved fighter planes which are next to the plane and a version where a chef’s character flows the character of Elba and Cena through the plane. But Naïsuller had to be ruthless. He was against the wall, in terms of history and time, and knew he just needed to continue.
“I thought, Look, we will arrive in the 30th minute of the film and then we must strike our act two. And I feel that it does not matter if you have an incredible 12 -minute sequence, you want to achieve what the film is, and these are these two guys alone without any means of support through enemy territory, “said Naïsuller.” This is why I continued to overshadow. “”
Naïsper has been helped in the sequence with fairly dazzling visual effects, including an Air Force One entirely generated by computer and shots that seem to be attached to missiles that rush to the plane. “Obviously, we cannot go up there and shoot the thing for real. But how would it get it if we could? ” Naïsuller said. (He said he had broken his own rule for two shots during the sequence because they were cool.) He imagined gunshots that could be captured from the Air Force One from another plane in the sky, trying to base the work of camera in real physique so that the spell is never broken.
One thing that was cut off from the sequence was a moment with a safety pod which is ejected from the Air Force One. It has been a legend for as long as Force One has stolen and was dramatized in films ranging from “Escape from New York” by John Carpenter to Harrison Ford in “Air Force One”. “It was just as if we were going unnecessarily too big. I mean, the whole sequence was going to be tall, but I said to myself, Why do we need to go so big? This is the first action scene with our two guys. I don’t want it to be too fantastic as much as I like the shots, ”said Naïsuller.
And although he could not use the Pod – which is still not confirmed – he has taken real life for a sequence later in the film, when Cena uses a reserve of blood in presidential limousine to thwart bad guys. Naishuller found a transverse cup of Barack Obama’s limousine, who showed that there was a reserve of blood. “This is an idea so obviously intelligent – if the president is injured just there, then you do not need to go to the hospital. You connect it and you can at least keep it alive until the real emergency services arise.” It was the quintessence of something that was both exaggerated and “somewhat anchored”, according to Naïller. “Yes, it will be silly. But it was a walk in this tone,” he said. And what a tone is.
“Heads of State” is in difficulty on Prime Video now.
