The creator of Space Invaders says that the developers are “more and more awaited to listen to the sales team”, but the creation of games “must be designed in a creative way”

The creator of Space Invaders, the classic of the Arcade game about the abandonment of invading UFOs, thinks that the development of the game “must be designed in a creative way first” at a time when the teams are more than ever forced to “listen to the sales team”.
Addressing Time Extension, Tomohiro Nishikado, space invaders, recalled a period in the game industry where most of his work “was transferred to mass production once finished”, and there was much less general costs than there is now.
“I feel very lucky about it,” he added. “My style of work was to think of a game by myself and to do it by myself. There were no managers making modifications or a descending interference. I therefore think it is very important for creatives and developers to try to do something for themselves, then to see if it is fun or not.”
This way of working quickly changed as the games exploded and that the studios have widened. “The game development process in Taito has finally changed, and we, the game creators, we were waiting for more and more to listen to the sales team, which proposed new title concepts they thought to sell,” he continued. “Then we started the development of games according to this. Personally, I do not think that is the right approach. The creators should try to play a game by themselves first, then it should develop in a wider project. This is what I felt throughout my career.”
