Why it works
- Soak the dates in hot water softens their skin and their flesh, ensuring that they gently mix in the drink without leaving soft pieces.
- The use of frozen bananas adds body and creamy and maintains the cold smoothie without watering it as ice would.
- The addition of a touch of salt sharpens the flavors of the smoothie.
Coffee and dates are a natural pair: the bitterness of the infusion learns the sweetness of caramel fruit. It is a combination to which I come back daily, eating two dates alongside a cup of black coffee in the morning. This smoothie is based on this same pairing, transforming it into a slightly sweet but balanced drink and nourishing enough to have breakfast.
In the mind, this smoothie is not so far from the famous Milk -Shake of Palm Springs that you will find along the California desert highways – a mixture of dates, milk and rich, cooling, refreshing and incredibly delicious ice cream. This reimagination channels the same sweetness focused on the date, but maintains the lighter and more balanced things, which makes it just as welcome in the morning as in the afternoon.
In this cold and creamy smoothie, coffee and dates are completed with frozen bananas, milk, Greek yogurt and hemp hearts, then mixed until they are smooth and thick. Coffee provides both the backbone and the balance, and the concentrated cold brewing works better – it offers deeper and more daring notes that resist the natural sweetness of the dates. That said, a solid lot of house coffee can also do the work if that’s what you have on hand.
The frozen banana gives the smoothie its thick texture and milkshake without ice, so each sip remains creamy instead of being watered down. For even more creamy, I like to use whole cow’s milk, but any unsweetened milk, such as almond, oats or soy, can be used in its place. Greek yogurt and nut cores add the body, balance and proteins, which makes this smoothie more durable. Instead of counting on protein powders, I prefer these entire ingredients to bring flavor as well as the substance to the smoothie.

A pinch of cinnamon goes beautifully with the natural flavor of the caramel of the dates, while cardamom is a nod to the traditions of Arabic coffee, where spices are often mixed directly in the grains. Finally, a touch of salt sharpens the flavors of the smoothie.
It’s a simple mixture, but a balanced balance enough to get me back every morning.

Notes
For a softer smoothie, use 3 dates; For a less soft version, stay with 2. Although the Medjool dates are easy to find, any variety will work here, even more dry, because the soaking step softened them. Keep in mind that different types have slightly different flavors.
Any milk of unwells can be used; However, whole cow’s milk gives the most creamy result.
The cold brewing concentrate adds more audacious and deeper coffee notes than ordinary brewed coffee, a twinning particularly well with the sweetness of the caramel medjool dates.
Hemp hearts are the tender colorful interiors of hemp seeds. They can be found in many general public grocery stores, as well as in natural and online food stores.
Make-ahead and storage
The smoothies are better appreciated immediately after the mixture, while they are still cold.
