The card shows where Xi Jinping is more popular than Donald Trump

Confidence in President Donald Trump and the Views of the United States fell among the main world economies in the past year, while China and its leader, Xi Jinping, increased slightly in popularity, according to the Pew Research Center spring survey.

In nine of the 24 nations interviewed, excluding the United States, confidence in the Chinese president to do the right thing about global affairs was higher than trust in Trump, according to Pew’s report. The feeling was found in about a quarter of the respondents to Canada and more than a third of those questioned in Mexico.

Why it matters

The global perceptions of leaders of the two largest economies in the world play a role in training alliances, trade and international diplomacy. The results of the PEW survey – were published respectively in June and July, complex attitudes in light and increasingly polarized towards American leadership under Trump and China under XI.

The Pew Spring Survey questioned more than 30,000 people from January 8 to April 26, before the United States joined Israel to attack Iranian nuclear sites and although Trump’s prices were not yet finalized.

What to know

Trump received mainly negative ratings in the survey of 24 economies, but was more popular than Xi in 13 countries, according to Nowsweekanalysis of results. In Greece and Kenya, confidence in Trump and Xi was respectively 37 and 64%.

In the United States, where there were no related data for Trump, 75% of Americans said they had no confidence in Xi to do the right thing about global affairs, against 13% who said the opposite.

More than half of respondents in 19 of the 24 countries said they lacked trust in Trump leaders, the survey said.

“Majority in most countries also express little or no confidence in Trump’s ability to manage specific problems, including immigration, the Russian-Ukraine war, American-Chinese relations, global economic problems, conflicts between Israel and its neighbors and climate change,” said Pew.

Asked about Trump’s personal characteristics, most of them described him as arrogant and dangerous, while relatively little saw him as honest, the center said. However, majorities in 18 countries considered Trump as a strong leader.

Respondents in Israel, Nigeria and Turkey had become more likely to give the United States a favorable note since last year. Israel and Nigeria were two of the five nations – as well as Hungary, India and Kenya – where at least half of the adults expressed their confidence in the management of Trump in global affairs.

Although the views of China and Xi have improved slightly in the past year, many people lacked confidence in XI to do the right thing on global affairs, Pew said.

The XI notes were the highest in Kenya and Nigeria, where about two -thirds of the adults had confidence in him. The views were more mixed in South Africa, Pew said.

In Europe, Latin America and North America, Xi views were more negative than positive. The same goes for Türkiye and Israel.

The people out of four of the five countries in Asia-Pacific interviewed were mainly lacking in confidence in XI. In Japan, for example, only 8% of those questioned had confidence in him. But in Indonesia, 53% of people trust in XI.

Overall, confidence in XI was lower in high -income countries than in mid -income countries, Pew said. But few people in the countries interviewed had Trump or Xi to do the right thing about global affairs.

What people say

Pew Research Center: “In many countries interviewed, views of the United States have become much more negative in the past year, while China’s views have become slightly more positive.”

Steven Cheung, White House spokesperson, told NPR on June 12: “President Trump is the president of the American people and his priority is to work on their behalf, no one else.” He added that “the overwhelming majority of Americans support his first program in America”.

What happens next

The future results of the survey will show the impact on Trump’s position on air strikes on the Iranian nuclear program and its prices policy. It is unlikely that international opinion polls will play an important role in White House politics, which under Trump has made America itself overwhelming.
