The new Mystery series of Netflix revolves around a school for “troubled” adolescents and the investigation after an escape attempt. This reveals dark secrets on the school and the city of Tall Pines.
Even if the show, created by Martin, is designed as a limited series, RebelThe end undoubtedly leaves room so that history continues. Alex Dempsey (Martin) decides to stay in large pines with Laura (Sarah Gadon) and their newborn. Leila (Alvia Alyn Lind) also decides to stay, while Abbie (Sydney Topliffe) chooses to leave.
Speaking with VarietyMartin and Scott asked if they wanted to do a second season or leave the end as it is. Martin acknowledges that public reactions indicate “An appetite for more” While believing that the show works like a mini-series. They also believe that the end of Alex is not so ambiguous and that it is more a question of viewers frustrated by his ultimate choice.
Scott maintains that although everything is not resolved, the story is mainly complete and that the different ways in which Alex and Abbie respond to their traumatic situation teach how there is not a single correct way to react to a traumatic situation. Martin: I made so much press and I am so interested in people’s reactions at the end. It seems that people have an appetite for more, but also it’s so funny that people say: “Well, it’s really ambiguous with Alex.” I say to myself: “I don’t know if it’s ambiguous – maybe he didn’t make the choice you wanted to make.” Some characters make disappointing and very human choices. I think, I hope it works like a mini-series, but it is also obviously fun to imagine what would happen. But I have the impression that the FBI would be there fairly quickly. There are so many dead now.
Scott: There are a lot of deaths. There are a lot at the bottom of this pond to find. I am so excited to see what people think, but I mean, there is a part of that which is a tragedy and that does not feel a little unresolved in a sense, but above all resolved. I think Dempsey makes a very clear decision. This is a decision that many of us take that comes with adulthood, it is that we are not always ready to risk exploding our little life to do what is good. And sometimes, that’s what adulthood looks like. I don’t want this to be the case, but it is sometimes. But there are different resolutions for other characters apart from Dempsey who paint the image of all human experience, the way we are all different people. Some people are like Abbie and can really hang on to themselves and be autonomous by this and do it. Some people don’t. It’s like having the panoply of answers and not just a path to face your trauma. It’s really important: there is not only a good way to do everything.
What it means for Wayward
Martin and Scott’s responses indicate that they are mainly satisfied with RebelThe end and do not currently plan to have a second season. The respective choices that Alex, Leila and Abbie are intended to feel like an end, although there is always room for the characters to change their mind in the future.
Opinion on Rebel have been mixed so far and the show has a critical score of 76% on rotten tomatoes. However, with the already hungry public of season 2 and potential avenues of narration to explore, it is always a possibility, especially if the series manages to perform well on Netflix streaming cards.
With Rebel Being inspired by true shocking stories, dark secrets still to discover and characters left in large pines, a second season could certainly occur. All the characters freeing themselves from large pines and all the secrets exposed could make the series more resolved.
That being said, Rebel Works well as a limited series, and Martin and Scott strongly plead why the end should be allowed to stand without continuation. The series leaves more an impact by making people think and fighting against viewers with the decisions of the characters instead of having a second season where everything is carefully resolved.
