The brutal revelation of who killed Carter has just proven something about the series

Publisher’s note: The following contains spoilers for Law & Order season 25, episode 1.Law and order is officially back with his premiere of season 25, “Street Justice”. Season 24 had its ups and downs, but for me, one of the best parts of the year was Sam Maroun’s personal struggles and how Odilya Mahalei Have transformed them into some of the strongest performances that we have seen since renewal. What I always liked in this show is that he is not afraid to leave things in disorder, but I admit that last year, the abrupt conclusion of Jessica Brady (MAURA TIERNEY) Arc looked like a missed opportunity. This is why I was relieved, and honestly a little surprised, that This first resumed where the final stopped. Carter Mills (Jordan M. Cox), the man who killed Sam’s sister and walked freely on another murder, was shot dead. And the question that weighs on everything is If Sam finally broke and took charge in hand.

The premiere of season 25 of “Law & Order” resumes season 24 Cliffhanger

The first started with Nolan Price (Hugh Dancy) Always fight with the possibility that Sam killed Carter. Even Nick Baxter (Tony Goldwyn) does not seem entirely convinced that she is innocent. Meanwhile, Sam literally exposes his anger, refuse to give a direct answer on the question of whether she had something to do with Carter’s death. Then, the evidence is starting to accumulate: street cameras capture a woman fleeing the scene, Brady discovers that Sam had the same type of weapon used, and suddenly there is a search warrant for his apartment. For a while, all signs point directly to SAM.

What did this job for me is that the writers have left Sam is vulnerable without transforming it into a cliché. Halevi absolutely nails the scene where Sam admits to Nolan that she did You want to kill Carter, even left his apartment with his pistol in hand, but stopped by throwing him into the East river. This admission makes her so painfully human, because honestly, who would not want revenge in her place? Even Brady admits that if it was her sister, she could have felt the same thing. This kind of honesty is when Law and order is at its best: when people who live and breathe the law also admit that they can see the other side. I was happy that they gave Sam that moment, because it did not only erased him from the crime, but it also gave him even deeper diapers.

The case is complicated during the premiere of season 25 “Street Justice”

Once Sam is officially authorized (the witness confirms that the drawer was greater), the real suspect is highlighted: Julia (Christine Spang), Carter’s girlfriend. At first, she seems to be just another devastated partner, but he then revealed that she and Carter had broken a few days before the verdict, and surveillance images show her the purchase of a firearm the day he walked free. Nolan moves to take care of the murder, But his testimony turns everything over his head. Julia details how Carter became violent, suffocating and violating him, and threatening to kill her the night when she shot him. It is a intestine not only because of what she endured, but because Sam clearly relives the story of her sister through Julia’s words. Julia swears that she met Carter in the street and had no choice but to defend herself, but the real question is whether it was fear in the time when the premeditated reimbursement.

This is where the Nolan / Sam dynamic really shines. Nolan, still the disciple of the rules, wants to stick to the letter of the law, while Sam cannot ignore that the system (and Nolan by extension) failed, and that if Carter had been condemned, Julia would not have been in this position at all. Their back and forth on the law against justice is Exactly the kind of narration that I like of this show.

Then comes the torsion. They offer Julia a plea for manslaughter did Wait outside the Carter condo, blowing a hole in his defense. Nolan hear, leaving Sam a choice: bury the truth or go anyway. What I loved is that she spreads to Nolan, but she also maintains that they should always push the plea, recognizing that “winning” at all costs is not the same as justice. Surprisingly, Nolan agrees and I think she is honest with him was a moment to do or break for their relationshipWho has quietly become one of my favorite games in the series.

The episode also quietly explains Shaw (Mehcad Brooks) Departure: Brady said to Riley (Reid Scott) that he took a job at 88 in Brooklyn, the district he always wanted to return. I admit, It’s a disappointment to lose Brookswhich has been such a solid part of the whole in recent seasons, but at least the exit was natural. And there is hope on the horizon since David Ajala was announced as the new detective, and although he did not make his debut during the first, I am curious to see what he brings to the mixture.

Overall, I thought that “street justice” was a really strong way to launch the season. He wrapped himself as cliffhanger from last year without dragging him, gave Odelya Halevi another showcase as Sam, and let Nolan tackle the disorderly space between law and morality. Law and order feels its best when it balances the depth of the character with the procedural elements that have made the franchise emblematic, and This first found this balance perfectly. If the rest of the season followed suit, we are in a convincing ride.

Law and order Thursday on NBC and is available to broadcast the next day on Peacock.
