“Ok, why nobody ever told me what to do with homemade pasta sauce could be so simple and delicious? I love it! I only had canned dice tomatoes, so I pulled them in the mixer for a few seconds and then used them instead of crushed tomatoes. So good!”

Simple pasta sauce recipe

This recipe for homemade pasta sauce is so simple, but very good. To do so, I use chopped beef, olive oil, onion, butter, crushed tomatoes, mixing Italian seasoning and salt and pepper. That’s it. It’s a bit like a Bolognese shortcut but ready in a time fraction, so you can dine quickly on the table during the week.

The secret to removing as much from so simple ingredients comes down to two things: butter and good 30 -minute simmer. Mijotage movies acidic flavors of crushed tomatoes and helps caramelize natural sugars in a subtle sweetness. The butter adds body and a slight creamy, which again helps to balance natural acids of tomatoes. You need the two elements to make this pasta sauce the best possible!

  • Add the chopped beef and olive oil to a saucepan and sauté on the middle until the beef is cooked (about 5 minutes). If you use a higher beef of fat (10% or more), you may want to drain excess fat once the beef has brown.

  • While the beef cooked, finely design the onion. Add the onion and diced butter to the cooked beef. Continue to blow up until the onion is soft and translucent (about 5 minutes).

  • Then add the crushed tomatoes, the mixture of Italian seasoning and freshly cracked pepper (10-15 cranks of a pepper mill). All to combine.

  • Place a lid on the pan and allow it to move. Once simmered, reduce the heat to low and simmer the sauce for 30 minutes.

  • After a minimum of 30 minutes to simmer, add about ½ teaspoon of salt, stir to combine, then taste and add more if necessary. The flavor of the sauce will deepen and the complexities will appear once the salt is added. Serve on favorite pasta or roasted vegetables.

Chopped beef and oil in a pan.Chopped beef and oil in a pan.

Brunz the beef: Start by adding ½ lb of chopped beef and 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a pot. Sauté the beef on the middle until cooked (about 5 minutes). If you are using a fat beef, you may want to empty excess fat once it is cooked. During the cooking of the beef, finely design a small onion.

Simmer: After simmering for 30 minutes, the sauce will be much less acidic and slightly softer, but to burst the flavor, you need to add salt. I would start with ½ teaspoon, I would give it a taste, then add more to your taste.

And that’s it! Seriously, so easy. And while the sauce simmer for 30 minutes, you can prepare your pasta or anything you plan to eat with your sauce that evening. 😉

This is the only pasta sauce I need, and really, I only need sauce. Optional pasta. 😂

I have been making this recipe for a look now (I published it for the first time in 2018!). And thanks to readers’ comments, I learned how flexible it can be. Here are some ideas to try in your own kitchen:

  • Exchange the chopped beef for ground chicken or turkey.
  • Add chopped garlic (about 2 pods) when you sauté the onion.
  • If you only have stored dice tomatoes, mix them before adding to the pan or crush them while they cook (simply note that the texture will be a little bigger!).
  • Incorporate two finely grated carrots with the onion. They mix in the sauce while it cooks, adding natural softness and a little additional vegetables without being obvious! The zucchini is also delicious and would give this sauce a taste similar to my recipe for sauce with hidden vegetable pasta.
  • If your sauce is still acidic even after the mixture of 30 minutes, incorporate a little sugar at the end to complete the flavor.
  • Do you want to make it without meat? Just jump the chopped beef or use your favorite vegetarian meat crumbs. You can also follow my Bolognese lens recipe for an option completely based on plants.

Suggestion service

This pasta sauce recipe is, of course, great with any form of pasta. Go with everything you have in your pantry, or for a meal seriously full of flavor, try it with our spaghetti Aglio e Olio. It’s also incredible on roasted vegetables! Originally, I shared this sauce in my roasted eggplant recipe with meat sauce, and it’s always one of my favorites. This recipe would also make an excellent lasagna sauce, and don’t forget a side of garlic bread!

Storage and reheating

This easy pasta sauce recipe is one of my most common dinners. Once cooled, it keeps itself well in the refrigerator up to 3-4 days in an airtight container. You can also freeze it up to 3 months in a freezer safety container (leave room at the top for expansion). Let it thaw in the refrigerator before reheating in the microwave or on the stove.

Our pasta sauce recipe on weekdays was initially published on 04/18/18. We updated it to be the best possible and 9/3/25 republished.
