Ted Danson Reveals the Only Time He Will Fight With Wife Mary Steenburgen (Exclusive)

There’s only one thing that causes a fight to break out between Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen.

The couple, who celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary in October, are a perfect match, as Steenburgen tells PEOPLE that she has “never been… as well known as I am by him.”

“He really knows who I am. He knows the meanest, smallest, ugliest parts of me. And he knows the highest, most soulful, most ambitious parts of me and, somehow, he loves all of that,” she says. “And I was extremely honest with him in that relationship, and that was important to me — and we both feel that.”

Danson, 77, agrees, but admits he’s the one causing trouble. “The only time we fight or get angry with each other is when I’m wrong,” he told PEOPLE.

“She’ll point out something to me that disappointed her or made her angry or hurt her or something, and I just refuse to be that person,” he explains. “‘No, I’m not that person you just described,’ so I argue and resist until I finally say, ‘Yeah, yeah. That’s me.’ “

Although it’s a point of struggle for her husband, Steenburgen, 72, says, “I actually know and recognize how deeply flawed I am. Ted doesn’t like doing that.”

“Yeah, I don’t like doing it myself,” Danson admits.

The couple, who began dating after starring in Pontiac Moon together, united on screen in A man inside season 2, which Steenburgen said she felt “so honored and lucky” to be a part of.

“I listened to Ted come home The right place and then the first season of this show is just reveling in the extraordinary storylines and the cast and crew that he’s so proud to work with,” she said. “And I’ve always been a little bit envious. So to be asked to be a part of all of that was so exciting. »

Danson echoed his wife’s sentiments, calling it a “dream come true.”

“We both love being actors; we both love the process,” he said. “So we spent two and a half months together, getting up, going to work early, but laughing the whole time because of what we had to say and do. It was really a great opportunity.”

As if the couple didn’t have enough time together — Steenburgen joined Danson’s Charles as a love interest — they “even shared a trailer,” she said, and their dog was along for the ride, too.

“We don’t bother each other,” she said. “I don’t know what that means, but I still feel like we have a lot of things I want to talk to him about.”
