West Ham overview against Chelsea Match

The manager of West Ham, Graham Potter, thinks that his players will need quality, luck and a “huge effort” to guarantee their first points of the home season against the heavy spenders of Chelsea on Friday.

During their first full season under Potter, the Hammers had 63% possession, but had a hard time threatening significantly during their 3-0 defeat at Sunderland in their first match.

“Chelsea has a very talented manager and a team at the back of a very successful summer,” said Potter about the winners of the Enzo Maresca World Cup.

“We must have a good balance between attack and defense and give everything. Fans will want better performance and better result.

“It is disrespectful towards Sunderland so that anyone who suggests that we should just introduce ourselves and win last week. We have not played according to our standards and now we must make sure that we are doing a good performance.”

Potter was on the right track for a first outdoor victory in charge when Jarrod Bowen gave West Ham’s advance in Chelsea on February 3, only for his team to reject an advantage at half-time during a 2-1 defeat.

Maresca remembers this match as “difficult” for the Blues. “They defended very well and I expect the same thing,” he added.

“The Premier League has just started and they are trying to find solutions in the same way as us.”

One of the problems that Maresca is trying to solve is the loss of central defender playing Levi Colwill thanks to a long-term knee injury, using Josh Acheambong, 19, in his post for the 0-0 draw at Home against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

“It is not in my mind not to play from the back,” Maresca replied to the suggestion that he may have to change his tactics to compensate for the absence of Colwill.

“You can be a little more direct when you play teams that are trying to be very pressing, but it is not at all in my mind to play in a different way. We used Josh in the last game. We are trying to find an internal solution.”
