Directors must fight for creative decisions are nothing new. But there may be a conviction that if something works and that a filmmaker is invited to make a sequel, they will be left alone (or, at least, disturbed less) to give life to their vision. However, this was not exactly the case with “John Wick: Chapter 2.” As director Chad Stahelski revealed, the leaders of Lionsgate really wanted to change one of the key death scenes in the film.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Staheski spoke on behalf of the release of the documentary “Wick is Pain” when he mentioned that the studio was not satisfied with the death of Gianna (Claudia Gerini). The character, as you may remember, is the member of the high table that Mr. Wick (Keanu Reeves) is responsible for killing his marker in the second film “John Wick”. Rather than being removed by wick, she cuts her own wrists while John looks and does nothing to intervene. He then pulls her in the head to relieve her pain and make her marker.
For what it is worth, this striking and bizarre death scene in “Chapter 2” was in fact the idea of Reeves in the first place. Anyway, when the time came to bring the film, Stahelski had to fight to keep the scene in the film as they designed it. Here is what he had to say about the question:
“On” John Wick 2 “,” there was a disagreement with someone very high in the studio on John Wick making the euthanasia-assistant to a character called Gianna (Claudia Gerini). It was: “Oh my God, we can’t have John Wick just kill her!” We don’t kill her.
Chad Stahelski learned to fight for John Wick
“John Wick” is perhaps one of the jewel franchises of the Lionsgate crown now, but it was not always like that. The first “John Wick” was a relatively modest success and in a low budget. Each subsequent entry in the film series has become a much more important success than the previous one, but during production on “Chapter 2”, the studio had no way to know that this would be the case. The film was much more risky than “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum” or “Chapter 4” in this way. Thus, creative quarrels had to expect.
However, Stahelski succeeded. The director has also clearly indicated that convincing a studio that something will work is rarely easy. “If I told you, for ‘John Wick 3’ ‘, I won’t do anything that worked before, I’m going to have a bunch of dogs that bite the crotch, and I’m going to kill 186 people.” Are you going to give me $ 100 million for this? “Synia Stahelski. He then explained how he learned to manage such questions in practice:
“If I give you the script, believe me, it reads worse that this pitch seems. But in my head, it makes sense. It was coming to me to be a ** a ** hole but, sometimes, the road to ** hole did not work. So, now I’m much more patient. I am going,” Listen to a video. Later, they say to themselves: “Oh, it looks cool.” Then everyone takes credit for everything.
Stahelski has undoubtedly proven itself at this stage. “John Wick” is now a $ 1 billion franchise that includes several suites with the film Spin-Off “Ballerina”. Lionsgate also has several repercussions in the work, as well as possible “John Wick 5.” Stahelski and Reeves will open the way, perhaps with fewer fights on the creative direction. But when a lot of money is involved, people will always have opinions. The best that all the director can hope is that the good idea wins.
