Starling starts hot

SCORE UPDATE: Syracuse 17, Hofstra 14 with 11:51 left in first half

JJ Starling scored 12 of the first 15 points for the Orange. He hit two 3s before using a pump fake to get his defender off the ground and attack the basket.

Later, Starling worked over a high-ball screen from Akir Souare and lifted a floater high off the glass for another bucket.

He feels it early.

Syracuse’s woes persist.

The Pride grabbed three offensive rebounds in the first media timeout, giving him a second look at the basket that he converted into five points.

Preston Edmead made a 3 on a second chance before working a high ball screen and hitting another 3.

Cruz Davis used his feet to create space and apply paint to William Kyle’s outstretched arm.

Pre-match

Syracuse is back in action two days after a hard-fought 71-63 victory over Saint Joseph’s.

The Orange came away with the victory, with some players feeling less than 100 percent and playing without sophomore forward Donnie Freeman for the fifth straight game.

Freeman is out again with an undisclosed injury. He hasn’t played since the team’s 78-73 win over Monmouth on Nov. 18.

The Orange really need his defensive rebounding prowess, and his ability to play inside sets him apart from other players on the roster. Sadiq White has shown the ability to hit a 3 at times. But he’s a mutt in the paint who will fight for his scraps. He was among those who had an off night Thursday against the Hawks.

Hofstra brings good guard play in the dome, highlighted by junior Cruz Davis and freshman Preston Edmead. Davis is averaging 20.6 points per game and has scored in double figures in all 11 games, including a 36-point outing in a win at Pittsburgh.

Syracuse had inconsistent play from its guards, especially at the free throw line and a little too careless with the ball at times. So far, it hasn’t proven too costly, but SU needs more from Georgia Tech transfer Naithan George and freshman Kiyan Anthony if they want to command big minutes.
