“You are not alone, shy … that’s the point.” Netflix started another official trailer for the film entitled SteveFrom the same Belgian filmmaker, Tim Miels, behind Cillian’s latest film Little things like these. Steve Now plays on Netflix to date (see here) – after having presented the Toronto film festival in 2025 last month to mainly positive criticism. The film follows director Steve who is fighting for the survival of his reform college while managing his mental health and other challenges. At the same time, the student in shy difficulty sails on his violent tendencies and his fragility, torn between his past and his future prospects. Cillian Murphy plays the role of full professor Steve, with a cast comprising Tracey Ullman, Jay Lycurgo, Simbi Ajikawo, Emily Watson, Douggie McMeekin, Youssef Kerkour, Luke Ayres, Joshua J Parker, Araloyin Oshunremi, Tut Nyuot, Tom Moya, Ahmed Ismail, Joshua Barry Barryand others. The film presents music by Ben Salisbury & Geoff Barrow. Adapted from Max’s book to wear “shy”: a story “on guilt, rage, imagination and childhood, on being lost in darkness and learning that you are not alone.” It’s a much better trailer and really makes me want to look at that. An honest compassionate film. Is worth a look.

Located in the mid-90s, Steve was a reimagination of the best-seller of Max Porter shy. The film follows a central day in the life of the head of the head Steve (winner of the Oscars Cillian Murphy) and his students in a last chance reform school in the middle of a world that abandoned them. While Steve fights to protect the integrity of the school and the imminent closure of the school, we are witnessing him to tackle his own mental health. In addition to Steve’s difficulties, we meet Shy (Jay Lycurgo), a troubled teenager taken between his past and what awaits us while trying to reconcile his inner fragility with his impetus for self -destruction and violence. The script is written by Max Porter, adapted from his own successful novel entitled “Shy”. It is produced by Alan Moloney, Cillian Murphy and Tina Pawlik. It will be the first at the Toronto 2025 film festival this fall.
