Mumbai: In a stunning development, which could perhaps even signal the end of his red-ball career, India’s T20 captain Suryakumar Yadav was on Friday left out of Mumbai’s 16-man squad for the 2025-26 season-opening Ranji Trophy match against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sher-E-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Srinagar starting October 15.Led by Sanjay Patil, the senior selection committee, which also included former India captain Dilip Vengsarkar, named India Under-19 captain Ayush Mhatre in the squad. Mhatre will fly straight to Srinagar with the rest of the Mumbai squad after arriving from Australia, joining the team at the Mumbai airport. The team will be led by Shardul Thakur, the disgraced Indian all-rounder.
“No, SKY has not been dropped. It’s just that his availability has not been confirmed for this match. The Mumbai Cricket Association staff tried to contact him (to ask if he would play in the match), but he did not give us his availability for this match,” MCA secretary Abhay Hadap told TOI. An indication that SKY may not be part of the Mumbai Ranji Trophy squad for the J&K match came when he also did not feature in Mumbai’s three-day practice match against Maharashtra at Gahunje in Pune (which concluded on Thursday). “It’s good because anyway, there is no chance of him being picked for India in the Tests, or even the ODIs. In his first-class career of almost 15 years since his debut against Delhi in December 2010, he has scored 5,758 runs in 86 matches at 42.33, with 14 hundreds, 30 fifties and a top score of 200 against Orissa (now Odisha). He also appeared in a Test for India, against Australia in 2023. This will therefore be the first time in many years that Mumbai will play without their Indian white-ball batting stars Suryakumar and Shreyas Iyer, who have taken a six-month break from red-ball cricket due to back problems. Meanwhile, in a big boost for Mumbai, Sarfaraz Khan returned to the team after completing his rehabilitation for a neck injury BCCIBangalore Center of Excellence. Sarfaraz had suffered a quadriceps injury while scoring consecutive hundreds in the Buchi Babu Trophy and was therefore forced to miss the Duleep Trophy and the Irani Trophy. All-rounder Shivam Dube is also in the squad, fresh from his heroics for India in their Asia Cup triumph in the UAE last month. Led by new captain Shardul Thakur, the Mumbai team will travel to Srinagar for the match on Saturday.
