“I will never stop wondering who I really am?” Grasshopper Film has released the first official US trailer for an acclaimed documentary film titled I’m not everything I want to bedirected by Czech filmmaker Klára Tasovská. This film premiered at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival almost two years ago and played at numerous festivals last year, including Karlovy Vary, CPH:DOX, NewFest and Viennale. This is a truly remarkable biographical film about the life of a photographer who grew up in Soviet-era Czechoslovakia, escaping the regime and its control through her camera – eventually traveling to Berlin and Tokyo before returning home to Prague. Using only photographs and journal entries that she reads herself, the artist – along with the filmmaker – intimately narrates her search for identity, daily struggles, physicality, relationships and real emotions. Beginning the story in Soviet-occupied Prague, a young photographer named Libuše Jarcovjaková embraces wild nights of rebellion, desire and resistance to conformity. I’m not everything I want to be retraces his 20 years of quest for freedom and self-acceptance. I’m quoted in this trailer because this documentary film is truly superb – I was deeply moved by everything it covers simply through its photographs and the stories it tells. A strong recommendation from me: this is also the Czech Republic’s nomination for the Oscars this year.

Intro via the Berlinale: “Libuše Jarcovjaková documents his life… His Czechoslovak homeland is in the repressive phase of “normalization” after the repression of the Prague Spring in 1968. [anti-communist protests]. The photographer searches for islands of freedom in Prague as well as her sexual identity; his camera is his constant companion. One of these islands is the T-Club, a meeting place for the queer scene. When a murder is committed and the police become interested in Libuše’s photos taken at the club, her personal journey of emancipation is abruptly interrupted. She enters into a marriage of convenience and moves to West Berlin. But this new world is also full of obstacles. With the rest of her money, she flew to Tokyo and for a short time became a sought-after fashion photographer there. Continuing to search for the life she wants to live, Libuše’s path takes her back to Prague via Berlin after the fall of the Iron Curtain.“🇨🇿 📸
