‘Stranger Things’ Cast Reacts to Season 5 Twist in Table Reading

DEADLINE: This article contains details on Stranger ThingsSeason 5

Now that the final season of Stranger Things got its first big twist, the cast of the Netflix series can breathe a little easier.

On Thursday, the series’ official YouTube page shared a behind-the-scenes video of the Duffer brothers revealing the explosive conclusion of the Season 5 episode “Chapter 4: Sorcerer” to the cast during a table read.

In the last moments of Stranger ThingsSeason 5 Vol. 1, all hope seems lost as Demogorgons wreak havoc on the military base where Will (Noah Schnapp) and his friends are trying to escape, and Eleven is preoccupied with the Upside Down. Suddenly, all of the Demogorgons freeze in mid-air and begin to collapse as it becomes clear that Will is controlling them telekinetically.

At the end of the episode “Chapter Four: Sorcerer”, Will looks up and wipes blood from his nose, reflecting a side effect of Eleven’s powers. Schnapp previously discussed the episode’s conclusion with Deadline.

“I think people confuse fear with weakness. Will has had a lot of fear over the years, because of what he’s had to go through, but that doesn’t mean he’s weak,” he explained. “He overcame that and came out stronger, and he does it with fear every time. He always comes back and he never collapses. So that’s his strength, and I think he shows that in the end he’s stronger than we all think.”

Co-creator Matt Duffer noted, “When we started talking about Season 5, we started talking about Will. He was a little more absent in Season 4, but he’s a central character. He’s the character that started it all, and a lot of this season was about coming full circle and going back to the beginning, which raised questions about how he disappeared and so on.

“But more than that, it was about Will’s journey to really discover who he was and accept that,” Duffer added. “So we liked the idea of tying that into some of the more supernatural elements, that in order to become his most powerful self, he also had to really accept who he is.”

With the first four episodes of Stranger Things, season 5 is now available to stream on Netflix, the next three will air on Christmas, and the finale will take place on New Year’s Eve.
