Stephen King’s classic ’80s thriller will soon leave Netflix ahead of the release of a new remake

A Stephen King The ’80s classic is set to leave Netflix in a few weeks, just before the remake hits theaters. This is clearly the year of King adaptations, with at least four of his stories alone being made into films and TV shows. But with just a few months until the end of 2025, there are a few King stories slated for release, including HE prequel, Welcome to Derry.
In the field of cinema, there is There remains one last adaptation which has not yet been released in theaters. Edgar Wright’s own adaptation of The running man is scheduled to be released on November 7, 2025. The upcoming thriller will star Glen Powell as Ben Richards, who enters a deadly competition in which he must survive for 30 days. This is only the second iteration of the survival classic, but the first attempt starred Arnold Schwarzenegger in the lead role.
While Schwarzenegger’s version is currently streaming on Netflix, the adaptation is expected to leave the platform in just a few weeks. According to their website, the 1987 version of The running man will leave Netflix on November 1, 2025less than a week before the remake debuts in theaters.
While reviews of the remake are expected to drop in the coming weeks, the 1987 The running man received mixed to generally positive reviews. While the original film was praised for its over-the-top action, critics were more critical of the repetitive plot and weak execution of King’s story.
Both Wright and Schwarzenegger reflected on the original 1987 film before the remake’s release. Wright said his version would be closer to King’s novel.showing in particular that the protagonist “is alone in the world, so it’s like the deadliest game of hide and seek,” a plot device that was missing in the 80s version.
In June of this year, Schwarzenegger was candid about his version of The running manexpressing his enthusiasm for the remake before addressing the key issue with his own film. By speaking with CBRthe action star admitted that the 1987 iteration could have been great if there had been better preparations, more money and better visual effects.
Running Man was one of the films that he did, I think it would have been great if we had been better prepared for this film, if we had had more money for this film, and if we had then… the visual effects, the visual effects technology, that they have today, all these things that I wished for after the film came out, I felt like it could have been better.
It was great, but it could have been better, and I think they have a good chance now with the new one Running Man to make it better.
Although early reactions are not available for the remake, one person has already seen the film and can vouch for how good it is. King recently shared that he saw the new The running mancalling him “Die hard for our times.” His answer is also intriguing since it has been confirmed that the remake will have a different ending than the original novel, which the author himself has given his approval to.
Now there’s a lot of anticipation for King’s final adaptation of the year, and The running man Already seems like a massive improvement over the 1987 version. Still, with less than a month before Wright brings his vision to the screen, audiences only have a few weeks to experience the Schwarzenegger version before it leaves Netflix for good.
