The Braves d’Atlanta did not miss quality departure launchers in the last two seasons. Max Fried and Kyle Wright in 2022. Spencer Strider in 2023. Of course, we cannot forget the fantastic season worthy of Cy Young by Chris Sale last year.
Although few things have turned well for the brave this year, they benefited from a solid game from Spencer Schwellenbach, who was more and more like a Cy Young candidate every day.
Spencer Schwellenbach quietly gave the brave another talent at Cy Young level
Upon entering the game on Monday, Schwellenbach had displayed an MPM of 3.26 out of 96 2/3 innings this year, and is in the middle of a fantastic series which helped to propel the braves in the margins of the image of the playoffs.
Schwellenbach posted a sparkling MPM of 2.77 in 55 1/3 innings in his last eight departures – a duration that includes his performance of 11 withdrawals against the Red Sox the day of his birthday with a complete dominant victory on the Brewers of Milwaukee. It’s high time, no matter who talks about.
And although Schwellenbach’s counting statistics were good, his advanced statistics were even better. It is in the 96th centile in walking rate (4.2%) and by being in the 94th centile in prosecution rate (34.5%). He therefore commands the area and made the strikers swing on the grounds he throws outside, which are two of the most important things that a starter can do in the MLB today.
Schwellenbach’s domination is even more precious after the brave has put the sale on the injured list last week with a coast injury that should keep it away for a while. Grant Holmes is in the middle of a strange season and strider continues to reproduce in shape after missing a year with an elbow injury.
Schwellenbach has the 13th best era in the national league, the second best walking rate (4.2%) and the third best whip (1.01). This is a great reason why the starting launchers of Atlanta have the fourth best era in NL (3.64).
During his last departure, Schwellenbach gave four points deserved in seven rounds against the dishes, which represents two more deserved points than he allowed in all departures against New York last year. For most entries, granting four points in seven rounds would be a cause of celebration. For Schwellebach, it was almost a low point of the season.
He has turned a better follow -up effort this season, but he remains to be seen if everything will be for nothing for a brave team who will not make the playoffs.
