Spanish box office in 2025 falls 8%, with ‘Lilo & Stitch’ topping the charts

In opposition to 2025 global cinema, in many key markets that appear at least up or stable compared to 2024, total box office in Spain plunged 8% in 2025 to 453 million euros ($534.5 million), from 65 million admissions, Comscore Movies Spain announced Tuesday.

Overall Spanish box office returns for 2024 were already 22% below the pre-COVID 19 average over the 2017-2019 period, the lowest performance of the five major European markets.

Among the biggest Spanish hits of 2025, Disney’s “Lilo & Stitch” topped the box office, with 24.7 million euros ($29.1 million) in revenue, followed by “Jurassic World Rebirth” (18.8 million euros: $22.2 million).

The biggest – if not the only – Spanish blockbuster was “Father, There Is Only One 5,” the final installment of Santiago Segura’s family comedy saga, which grossed 13.4 million euros ($15.8 million). The franchise’s films have topped the Spanish film charts in five of the last seven years.

“It’s been a frustrating year. Looking at the first half results, which were up 3% from 2024, everything pointed to 2025 being either up or at least flat compared to 2024. But October, down 28%, while Spain experienced spring weather, and November, down 31%, contributed to that,” said David Rodríguez, general manager of Comscore Movies for Spain and Portugal.

“Beyond ‘Father there is only one 5’, no other Spanish film has really been a big success at the box office,” he added.

Action films suitable for family consumption dominated the Spanish box office in 2025, Rodríguez observed. They were accompanied by purely family films, both types of films playing on the virtual cinema: “Avatar: Fire and Ashes”, “A Minecraft Movie”, “Zootopia 2”, “How to Train Your Dragon”, “Mufasa, the Lion King” and “Fantastic Four: First Steps” all made the Spanish Top 10 of 2025, according to provisional estimates from Comscore Movies through December 29.

No American film, however, has achieved the spectacular 45.5 million euros ($47.3 million) in revenue for 2024’s “Inside Out 2” in Spain, the second best result for a film in the country since 2014’s “Spanish Affair.”

On the positive side for Spain, four titles from high-end authors entered the national Top 10, led by “The Captive” by Alejandro Amenábar (5.3 million euros: 6.2 million dollars).

Most striking, however, was the €3.9 million ($4.6 million) for San Sebastián’s big winner “Sundays” by Alauda Ruiz de Azúa and the €2.9 million ($3.4 million) box office for Cannes Jury Prize winner “Sirāt,” now shortlisted for the International Feature Film Oscar, both showing how Movistar Plus+’s strategy of creating arthouse event films can pay dividends in terms of theatrical results.

Filled with potential American animation and live-action giants, as Gower Street Analytics observed, 2026 is expected to be the most profitable global year since 2019. “Should,” however, is sometimes a sad word when talking about box office, and not just in Spain.
