Spain subjects “sirât” for the best international feature film

Oliver Laxe SyrupWho won the jury prize at the Cannes festival this year, was submitted as a Spanish entry for the best category of international feature films during the 98th annual academy.

The film was chosen this afternoon by the Spanish Film Academy. Syrup was chosen from a limited list of three films, which included Carla Simón Pilgrimage And SpellDirected by Eva Libertad.

Syrup Follows Man (Sergi López) and his son (Bruno Núñez Arjona) arrive in a remote rave in the mountains of southern Morocco. They are looking for Mar, their daughter and her sister, who disappeared months ago during one of those parties that never end. They distribute his photo over and over again, surrounded by electronic music and a kind of freedom that they have never known. There, they decide to follow a group of ravers in search of a last part which will be held in the desert, where they hope to find the young woman who disappeared.

The film features the veteran actor Sergi Lopez alongside Bruno Núñez Arjona, Richard Bellamy, Stefania Gadda and Joshua Liam Henderson.

Syrup is an original Movistar Plus film + product in collaboration with films Da Ermida, El Desseo, Uri Films and 4A4 Productions, distributed in Spain by Bteam Pictures. International sales are managed by the match factory. Neon will release the film in the United States.

Filmmaker Pablo Berger, who was nominated for the Oscars last year to Dreams of robot, announced this choice this morning. He was joined by the president of the Spanish Academy Fernando Mendez-Leite.

Last year, the choice of Spain was Saturn return by Isaki Lacuesta and Pol Rodríguez. The film has not made the restricted list.
