South Africa appoint new T20I captain: David Miller out of limited-overs series against Pakistan

In a major setback ahead of their limited-overs tour of Pakistan, South African star batsman David Miller was ruled out of the entire series due to a hamstring injury. Cricket South Africa (CSA) has confirmed that the southpaw suffered a first-grade hamstring strain during training, forcing him to miss the T20I and ODI legs of the current tour.

Injury setbacks rock South Africa ahead of white-ball series against Pakistan

Miller’s absence is not the only blow to South Africa’s plans. The Proteas will also be without a fast bowler Gerald Coetzeewho was ruled out of both formats after suffering a pectoral muscle injury during a recent T20I match against Namibia.

The twin injuries have compounded South Africa’s selection challenges, particularly with several senior players rested ahead of a busy international schedule. The absence of two key players – Miller’s experience in the middle order and Coetzee’s pace – will test the team’s strength as they prepare to face a competitive Pakistan side at home.

South African ODI and T20I captains

Cricket South Africa has handed Donovan Ferreira the T20I captaincy, a move seen as an investment in the team’s next generation of leadership. Ferreira, known for his aggressive middle-order batting and adaptability, will look to inspire a young team against Pakistan’s experienced T20I unit.

To support the revamped line-up, Matthew Breetzke and uncapped hitter Tony de Zorzi were added to the T20I squad. Their inclusion highlights ASC’s focus on developing new talent while maintaining balance within the team.

In the ODI setup, Matthew Breetzke will take over as captain, while Ottneil Baartman will replace Coetzee to strengthen the bowling attack.
