Only a few hours after President Donald Trump announced that he intended to withdraw the United States from the Paris climate agreement, three state governors announced the training of the United States Climate Alliance, a union which will strive to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, even as national leadership on climate change.
“If the president is going to be Awol in this deeply important human enterprise, then California and other states will intensify,” said California governor Jerry Brown.
For the moment, the Alliance includes California, New York and Washington’s state. The governors of these states, Jerry Brown, Andrew Cuomo and Jay Inslee, respectively, published on Thursday a statement describing how the new alliance will establish partnerships at the state level to pursue an aggressive American action on climate change and maintain the objectives and standards of the Paris Agreement.
“The president has already said that climate change is a hoax, which is exactly the opposite of almost all scientific and global opinions,” Governor Brown said in the press release. “I don’t think the reality of fighting is a good strategy – not for America, not for anyone. If the president will be awol in this deeply important human enterprise, California and other states will intensify. ”
Governor Cuomo echoes this feeling. Trump’s reckless decision to withdraw from the Paris climate agreement has devastating repercussions not only for the United States, but for our planet, “he said. “This administration abdine its leadership and takes a rear seat for other countries in the global fight against climate change.”
California, New York and Washington Combined are home to nearly 70 million people, or around 20% of the American population. And their governments have already started to act. For example, the California State Senate adopted legislation on Wednesday which forces California to develop 100% of its electricity from renewable resources by 2045.
Until now, no other state has signed the alliance, although 61 American mayors have also promised on Thursday that their cities will support the principles of the Paris climate agreement.
