Sofia Coppola and Marc Jacobs on their doc ‘Marc by Sofia’

Two longtime friends will be among the most discussed red carpet pairs in Venice.
Sofia Coppola is the director of “Marc by Sofia”, a new A24 documentary first in Venice on September 2. Coppola was approached by RJ Cutler and Jane Cha cutler producers to make the film, which is a Kaleidoscopic exploration of Jacobs, traced both its production of a unique collection and its influences over time.
Coppola and Jacobs spoke to Variety the day before an important step. “I am excited for my dress that adjusted tomorrow, with Marc,” said Coppola. “It’s always exciting and scary.” Jacobs was worried about how the film will pass, but said to Variety: “I know I’m in good hands with Sofia.”
Marc, you lived in the eyes of the public, but was there a new vulnerability to allow Sofia to tell your story?
Marc Jacobs: I always feel quite vulnerable when I show work or when I share work, but I felt very comfortable exposing everything to Sofia. It was very natural, once I had initial anxiety to actually participate.
Knowing Marc as well as you, what about him – not only as an Imi, but someone you really could make a film?
Sofia Coppola: I didn’t think of making a documentary, but I still like to talk to Marc. It is interesting and inspiring. And so when the cutlery approached me – they had spoken to Marc about this documentary, and would I do it? – I said to myself “I can’t do that. Because it’s my friend, I should do a good job.”
But I kept thinking how fun it would be to follow this collection, to arise throughout the process, and to also want to share all its references and inspirations with the young generation.
There is a real quality of my mood in the way the film brings together clips from all Marc’s inspirations.
Coppola: I wanted it to feel like an impressionist portrait of him and be able to go to these tangents about his inspirations. To try to snatch and discover as you go. It was new to me, and really fun to work in this way – we arrived at almost collage.
Working together, have you both realized that making a film and the staging of a fashion show have surprising similarities?
Coppola: I have always felt a connection, because all creative people have a similar language, even if we work differently.
Jacobs: I think back when I met Sofia for the first time, it was very clear that we shared some loves – artists, musicians, fashion and photography moments. One of the reasons why we got linked was that we had these joint love.
I remember seeing a Fiorucci poster in his house – we have always shared it. We have always shared Sonic Youth. It looked like a continuation: rediscovering these things that have always been catalysts for me, for her or for both of us.
Coppola: Whenever I see a leopard print coat in her collection, I think of Mrs. Robinson [from “The Graduate”]. We both think of Mrs. Robinson. It’s great to have this stenography: I was trying to make the film personal, but I always want to include the public. I never want you to feel like a game.
Sofia, you are well known for films probe the interior life of young women. Was the chronicle of Marc’s life unusual for this reason?
Coppola: I didn’t think about it. It’s always scary to do something – you understand it as you go. I just wanted to show a sincere representation of Marc – I wanted her to feel personal, never intrusive or essential, but to share things I know about Marc.
