Snowstorm expected to hit New York and New Jersey – NBC New York

What you need to know

• A powerful winter storm is expected to pummel New York City and New Jersey — and potentially dump more than eight inches in parts of the Hudson Valley — through Saturday morning.
• A winter storm warning has been issued for the entire metro area, from southern Connecticut to northeastern New Jersey and southeastern New York. This lasts until Saturday afternoon.
• Snowfall rates could reach 2 inches per hour at the height of the storm overnight. Check the latest severe weather warnings here.
• Because we’ve had so little snow in recent winters, even 4 inches would be Central Park’s largest total in four years.
• For New York, Connecticut, and most of New Jersey, it was forecast to be an all-snow event, as temperatures would remain below freezing for the duration. However, some areas will experience a mix of snow, sleet, freezing rain and rain.
• A state of emergency is in effect in New Jersey and New York has issued a travel advisory; Drivers should expect delays during holiday travel and hazardous travel conditions during snow.
