Shopify in numbers

Shopify is the largest independent e-commerce platform by market capitalization and one of the largest technology companies in Canada.

At just over $200 billion, it’s six times bigger than eBay, and on Black Friday itself it helped its five million partners generate $6.2 billion in GMV (gross merchandise value), an increase of 25% year-over-year. In 2024 alone, it processed nearly $300 billion in transactions.

With such performance, it’s no surprise that its stock price is up nearly 45% since the start of the year.

Major clients – according to its Wikipedia page – include Tesla, PepsiCo, Lindt, Red Bull and luxury giant LVMH.

It’s an unfortunate time

Shopify really couldn’t have picked a worse day, other than Black Friday, to experience an outage.

A number of frustrated shop owners (above) have turned to X to express their feelings – as one commented, “as a small business owner this is really bad”.

Hopefully this won’t last too long – Shopify’s status page lists it as “degraded performance” in areas like “API & Mobile” and “Point of Sale”, rather than a partial or major outage. But at the time of writing, reports on Downdetector are still on the rise…
