A family film by Mark Wahlberg becomes a Netflix blow 7 years after its release

The streaming trend known as “Newstalgia” continues, with television shows and forgotten films to different audiences as if they were new. Netflix has participated in this trend for some time now. In fact, it could be the King of Newstalgia, because the streamer continues to postpone forgotten projects and give them a rebirth of the age of streaming.

In October 2024, for example, an actuator from Jason Statham Forgotten dominated the Netflix charts, only for another film by Heist Statham Bygone Statham to exceed the Tubi classification in April 2025. It was not only the stars of brutal British action that benefit from this phenomenon. The Dwayne Johnson action thriller forgotten “Faster” was reintroduced to the public via Netflix in December 2024, while a forgotten Chris Hemsworth flop became an instant success of Netflix in January 2025. Now, it’s Mark Wahlberg’s turn.

To be fair, Wahlberg benefited from the Newstalgia trend as much as anyone, several of his neglected films having already found their way on the most watched charts of Netflix in 2024 only. Now, however, we are entitled to one of the lighter efforts of the actor in the form of “Family Instant”, a 2018 family comedy which managed to charge the Netflix subscribers enough to reach the top of the Streamer ranking.

An instant family found a house on the Netflix charts

“Instant Family” features Mark Wahlberg like Pete Wagner and Rose Byrne as his wife, Ellie. The couple decides to become nourishing parents and adopt three brothers and sisters, ranging from 6 to 15 years. But while the pair manages to do fairly well with the two youngest children, Juan (Gustavo Escobar) and 6 years Lita Isabella (Julianna Gamiz), Rebellious Teen Elizabeth (Isabela Merced) proves much more difficulty, putting Pete and Ellie by parenting.

This kind of healthy price seems to have been a success with Netflixers, because the film dominates the graphics of the streamer. “Instant Family” reached the platform on May 16, 2025 and, according to Flixpatrol, a site that follows the streaming television numbers on matching platforms, it has become an instant success in the United States. The film made its debut in second place on May 17, remaining there until it reached number one on May 19. “Instant Family” then stayed in the front row for another day before falling back to number two at the time of the editorial staff.

All of this is added to a pretty little Newstalgia victory for Netflix, which has once again proven that the films do not even necessarily need to be so old to have a successful reintroduction to broadcast the public. It remains to be seen if the “instant family” can maintain its position near the top of the graphics, because it has been usurped in the number one position by the documentary “Untold: The Fall of Favre” and is just ahead of the Comedy of Vince Vaughn 2025 “Nonnas”, which has been running the Netflix Charts for some time.

Does the instant family are worth watching?

“Instant Family” may not have become the classic of modern family comedy that the filmmakers had hoped, but it was quite well behaved in its beginnings in 2018. Not only did it earn $ 119.7 million with a budget of $ 48 million, but the criticisms were also won by Mark Wahlberg and Rose Byrne, whose chemistry of the screen obviously impressed several criticism. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film carries a respectable criticism of 82%, even the “best criticisms” giving the decent brands of the Wahlberg family.

Robbie Collin du Daily Telegraph thought that “Instant Family” was “boosted immeasurably by Byrne and Wahlberg, which make a pair of attractive comics and bounce well in the many parental moments of the film.” Bilge Ebiri from New York Magazine / Vulture was a little less free, although always more positive, writing: “When it works, it’s really funny and moving. But when it is not, Hoo Boy, it’s atrocious. But it works above all. I think.” But not everyone was positive. Nigel Andrews, from the Financial Times, concluded that if the film “begins” It “becomes Hollywood” before meeting “as a Schmaltz diabetic quality comedy”.

However, if you plan to join the crowds of Netflix in this return, the film has made the list of number 12 on / the film of the best movies by Mark Wahlberg.
