After having plunged its toes in superior quality territory with the supra, the redesigned tundra and the crown sedan, Toyota is clearly serious to exceed the camrys and the rav4 that we all know.

Now, with Ottoman seats, champagne coolers and a technology that could make a Silicon Valley jealous office, the most recent Toyota deputies are its most daring luxury movement to date. The real question is not if they can hang out with the Germans – it is if Mercedes and BMW should sweat.

The fourth generation and vellfire alphard share a lot of external style, but everyone always has their own personality. They mix comfort and class with just enough attitude to turn the heads.

The Toyota mantra was “energy luxury x impact”. Net lines and a daring grille give these MPV a sense of surprising power, showing that even a family mover can make a statement.

The alphard sports a slightly more tamed frontal, while the vellfire comes out with massive vents flanking its grille. This additional attack indicates the vellfire square as the high -end option.

The grids are not the same either – the alphard rocks a checkered pattern, and the vellfire sticks with horizontal slots. Beyond these adjustments, the two seem almost identical from the outside.

The interior is incredibly spacious, even more than the previous models. Toyota added 0.2 inches between the front and second row seats and 0.4 inches between the second and third rows without cutting in the space of the trunk.

Inside, the cabin has the impression of belonging to a class S Lexus LS or Mercedes. Leather covers almost all surfaces, and rear passengers take total control over seats and entertainment positions.

Over the years, the alphard has gradually slipped into the territory of the vellfire while Toyota has refined the mini-duties. The two were so close that Toyota even planned to drop the vellfire entirely and to stick to the alphard.

Instead, they launched the two models, aimed at giving everyone a separate identity while performing them in parallel. The vellfire clearly targets the high -end crowd, the coming standard with Android Auto and Apple Carplay, more sophisticated interior options and an additional leg space for third row passengers.

Even with these adjustments, it is difficult to distinguish them at a glance. They feel less like two separate vehicles and more like different versions of the same car, the vellfire acting like a slightly more focused alphard focused on performance and luxury.

Because these MPVs concern luxury and comfort, Toyota has made an additional effort so that passengers ride gently. The TNGA platform, associated with two or four-wheel drive, has been set for rigidity and minimum vibrations.

They also added Macpherson spacers specific to TNGA and mechanically adjustable shock absorbers to maintain refined driving. Each detail is designed to make the cabin calm and composed, regardless of the road.

For the moment, the only information on prices comes from the PDSF suggested in Japan. Toyota does not intend to release the alphard or the vellfire in North America at that time.

That said, their vision sometimes becomes a little confused. Trying to ensure that alphard and vellfire feel like separate models feel strange when the differences are so subtle, and some design choices – such as handles and additional pimples – may feel above elegant.

Even so, the market for these MPVs is solid. The two models were coherent class leaders, and Toyota’s avant-garde approach shows how Alphard and Vellfire represent the peak of their innovation.
