Severe thunderstorms bring hail, lightning to West Valley, Phoenix

PHOENIX (AZFamille) — The West Valley received another round of storms Wednesday, with rain and hail hitting the region.
The series of storms moved from the southwest, ranging from the Avondale and Tolleson areas to Glendale and Peoria. Several viewers recorded video of heavy rain and hail covering the streets.
Wet weather is also causing delays at Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport. The FAA reportedly ordered a layover for flights to the valley. This is expected to last until 6 p.m. The agency also specifies that from 5:30 p.m., flights departing from Phoenix are delayed by 15 minutes on average.
Due to yesterday’s rain, the ground is saturated and any additional rain could result in flooding. A flood watch is in effect in northern Maricopa County until late at night, including in places like Deer Valley, Rio Verde, Tournesol, Surprise and Vistancia.
It is also in effect in parts of Yavapai County, including towns like Prescott, Cottonwood, Camp Verde, Seligman, Ash Fork and Cordes Junction, where heavy rain from thunderstorms could lead to flooding in those areas.
Temperatures will remain in the mid 60s for the next few days, until the 70s return next week with drier conditions.
Overnight, as the system moves from west to east, activity will shift to the higher terrain of eastern Arizona, but we could still see a few lingering showers in the valley Thursday morning. Thursday afternoon, the weather should be dry in the Valley.
For the high country, snow levels will drop to around 6,500 feet through Thursday, with another 1 to 2 inches possible for areas like Flagstaff. Larger accumulations are possible across eastern Arizona, from the Rim to the White Mountains, as the system moves eastward overnight.
One to four inches of rain above 7,000 feet is possible through Thursday. Then another system moves into the state right after this storm. Another Pacific weather system will move east toward our region Thursday evening, bringing more moisture to the state and increasing rain chances in western Arizona early Friday morning.
Right now, the chance of rain is about 30% for the valley Saturday and Sunday. Precipitation amounts are still uncertain. By next week, expect calmer conditions and highs in the 70s.
