Sergio Ramírez. The evolution of ideas and literature

The person who came to study conversations with José María Brunet on this occasion has a long career during which he combined politics and literature. We will talk about it, if the two dedications are recovered. Here is Sergio Ramírez (Masatepe, Nicaragua, 1942). Our guest was vice-president of his country between 1985 and 1990 and won the Award Cervantes in 2017. These are two key dates of his biography. A few years earlier, in 2014, he had received another important literary prize, Carlos Fuentes, who distinguished him for having known “a literature engaged in a high literary quality”. With delivery, it was defined as a “free and critical intellectual, of high civic vocation”. We mention these criteria because they contribute to a brief and precise synthesis of the personality of Sergio Ramírez, an intellectual persevering in the care of words and ideas, those of stories and these in political action. A road, the latter, which was not always from Rosas. From 1990, our guest changed the executive power of the parliamentarian, from where he promoted reforms that had the rejection of the president, Daniel Ortega. We talked about the objectives of these reforms which did not first prosperate, the difficulty of installing a democratic system with guarantees in Nicaragua and the departure of Sergio Ramírez with regard to the ranks of SandiniSmo, which he had supported since his origins. We also deal with the journalistic and literary work of our guest, its objectives as a narrator. In this activity, he concentrated after having abandoned the first line of politics in 1996 and that he was finally persecuted by the Daniel Ortega regime, which determined that in 2021, our guest would be installed in Spain as an exile.
