Why Netflix canceled Rob Lowe’s unstable after two seasons

Television can sometimes seem inconsistent, especially in the streaming era. For a moment, you watch your new favorite program, and the next one, let’s go. Many programs have been canceled before their time has passed, but knowing that this form of entertainment is a company and that these decisions are made with business in mind never facilitates the pill to swallow. For example, those who liked “unstable” by Rob Lowe on Netflix are certainly not happy to know that season 3 does not occur.
“Unstable” focuses on the universally admired biotechrical entrepreneur, Ellis Dragon (Rob Lowe), and season 2 sees him disposing of a series of challenges and spirit games for his son Jackson (John Owen Lowe) to see if he can become the heir to the Dragon Empire. Lowe co-created and co-suffered in the show alongside her real son, adding a reality meta-layer to all of this. The casting of the series also included Fred Armisen (“Portlandia”), Sian Clifford (“His Dark Materials”), Rachel Marsh (“Before We Go”) and Lamorne Morris (“New Girl”).
Only two months after the start of the second season of the show, it was canceled by Netflix. The deadline revealed at the time that “unstable” failed to enter the 10 best graphics in the streamer, which assured that the cancellation was coming. He collected less than 1.4 million views during his first weekend, which could be a decent number for a network television program, but not for Netflix. Thus, he received the ax.
Lowe is no stranger to leave shows behind. It’s one thing for him to choose to leave “the west wing”. It was his choice. This is another thing entirely that the carpet be torn off under him before wanting to let him go.
The creators of Unstable wanted to find a new house for the show
The report at the time also noted that the creative team, which also included the Victor Fresco and Andrew Gurdland showrunners, did its shopping in other networks. This is something that has happened more and more in the modern era. Netflix has actually recorded shows more than a few times, with “designated survivor” by serving as an example. “Lucifer” would be another.
When writing these lines, nothing indicates that the show will be saved, and almost a year withdrawn from the cancellation, it seems unlikely that while coming. So, unfortunately, viewers will probably have to accept that the dragon saga has finished. Lowe has a first agreement in Fox, having played in the “9-1-1: Lone Star” by Ryan Murphy, in addition to welcoming “The Floor”, but the show did not find a house there, despite Lowe’s efforts.
Even if the series was canceled relative to the start of its race, the creators seemed to take it in stride. John Owen Lowe went to Instagram to share his thoughts when the news has surfaced:
“I wanted to take a second to thank everyone for the incredible experience of making unstable. For the casting, I love you. For the crew, I love you. For fans, I love you and I appreciate you. So proud of us. This rock show. Rocked? Rocks. And in Netflix: Thank you too.”
The critical response is also something to look at here. “UNSTABLE” has a critical approval rating of 68% on Rotten Tomatoes to go with an audience rating of 79% correct. Aside from the Terne viewer, it is not as if it was a critical sweetheart that a network could earn decent public relations for rescue. There was simply not much for any potential contender.
Unstable installation of a season 3, we will probably never see
The frustration for viewers, in this case, has just known where the show has left things. In the final of season 2, it was revealed that Ellis Dragon was intended to present herself in the United States. This would have informed season 3 “unstable”, by changing the show in a major way.
“The idea that we had from Ellis to the presidency – we did not know how much it would end up being at a time when, for last week, nobody knows who runs, what does what, what is happening,” said Rob Lowe in August 2024, with the program that strikes little time after Kamala Harris took over the race. “It’s chaos. So it’s a fun moment to explore this.”
Lowe, in this same interview, explained what we would have seen if the show had received a season 3, whether on Netflix or another network. Be careful, at the time, Lowe did not know that the show was going to be canceled, but here is what he had to say on this subject:
“I can’t wait to see Ellis make her way, and probably be a little brilliant in her way by putting her campaign just in place. I want to see Fred Armisen [Leslie] By carrying out a campaign, maybe Jackson being Bobby Kennedy to Jack Kennedy from Ellis. We are very focused on the fact that Ellis is super excited that Jackson becomes the first son. “”
The programs concluding despite the plans of more episodes are a story as old as time, it seems. “Daredevil” had plans for season 4 and season 5 before Netflix cancels the show, with Disney + which later releases the series in the form of “Daredevil: Born Again”. There are almost countless examples, and unfortunately, it must now be added to the constantly increasing battery.
You can broadcast “unstable” now on Netflix.
