Seasons 4 and 5 of X-MEN ’97 are already being discussed by Marvel Studios, confirms Brad Winderbaum

At last weekend’s New York Comic Con, Marvel Television confirmed that X-Men ’97 Season 3 has been officially greenlit ahead of Season 2’s return next summer.

Plans for the series extend well beyond that, as Brad Winderbaum, head of streaming, television and animation at Marvel Studios, confirmed that discussions about seasons 4 and 5 are already underway.

Speaking to Collider, the executive revealed: “There is definitely, more than possible, more to come from X-Men ’97. We’re talking about seasons 4 and 5 now.”

There were rumors – started by fired showrunner Beau DeMayo – that Kevin Feige wasn’t very happy. X-Men ’97 potentially steal the planned live-action X-Men the thunder of the restart. We’re not sure how much weight to place on these claims, but if they’re true, it could impact the chances of Seasons 4 and 5 becoming a reality.

Marvel Television’s plan is to air its shows every year, so season 3 is expected to premiere in 2027. Confirming that work is well underway on this, Winderbaum said: “Season 3, I’ve almost seen animatics the whole season, and it’s amazing. I saw an episode the other day.”

THE X-Men: The Animated Series revival was a hit with fans and managed to more than live up to its predecessor. DeMayo developed much of Season 2, so Season 3 will be the big test of whether the show can maintain this momentum.

Addressing the changes behind the scenes once again, Winderbaum recently said: “Same director, same producers, same cast, many of the same writers, and it stands on the shoulders of giants. One of the things that makes X-Men ’97 work so well is that everyone is rowing in exactly the same direction. Everyone who works on the show knows this original series inside and out.”

“And we work very closely with Eric, Julia Lewald and Larry Houston [creators of X-Men: The Animated Series],” he continued. “They are here all the time to review the material and chat with the artists. The second season seems to be a worthy successor to the first season.”

Pressed to comment on DeMayo’s claims on social media, Winderbaum added: “We’ve talked about it before. I’m grateful to Beau. We started this show together. I think he’s done a great job. Honestly, I don’t really watch it or read anything, so I don’t really know.”

X-Men ’97 features the voices of Ray Chase, Jennifer Hale, Alison Sealy-Smith, Cal Dodd, JP Karliak, Lenore Zann, George Buza, AJ LoCascio, Holly Chou, Isaac Robinson-Smith, Matthew Waterson, Ross Marquand and Adrian Hough. Neve Campbell is set to lend her voice to Polaris.

X-Men ’97 Season 2 will air on Disney+ next summer. All episodes of season 1 are now broadcast on the platform.
