Salmonella epidemic supplement

One type of supplement was linked to a salmonella epidemic in the United Kingdom.

Orgenism recalls the membrane capsules with eggs sold on Amazon due to the contamination by Salmonella.

The salmonella found was linked to a handful of diseases after consumption of the product.

The Food Standard Agency (FSA) said that the detected type of salmonella is resistant to several antibiotics. It produces an extended spectrum beta-lactamase (DSBL) and is resistant to fluoroquinolones, tetracycline and fosfomycin, which makes infections more difficult to treat.

Consumers were invited not to have the product in household waste or flush capsules on the toilet. People should contact their local health protection team to get advice on how to eliminate them.

All codes of orgenism lots capsules of the egg shell membrane in a size of package of 60 capsules, 500 mg per portion are affected.

Small epidemic
Hannah Charles, main epidemiologist for gastrointestinal infections at UKHSA, said: “We are working with public health in Scotland, FSA and food standards in Scotland to study a small salmonella epidemic of less than five cases related to membrane capsules with eggs, which are used as food supplements.

“These supplements are generally taken by people according to fitness regimes and the elderly, as they claim to have advantages for joint health and longevity. However, elderly adults and those who have existing health problems are faced with a higher risk of developing serious disease by salmonella infection.

“Salmonella can spread from one person to another, as well as food. Anyone who suffers from diarrhea or vomiting should be washing your hands carefully after using the toilet and avoid manipulating or preparing food for others. Please stay at home at work or keep sick children away from school or nursery up to at least 48 hours after the symptoms are released. ”

In Ireland, the HSE-HPSC said it was aware of the recall of the product published by the Food Safety Authority of Ireland (FSAI) and the reasons for its implementation. There is no disease related to the recall. There were three other Salmonella epidemics informed at HSE-HPSC in 2025.

After the FSAI food alert at the end of June, Amazon later confirmed that there was no direct distribution of the product allocated in Ireland.
