Sweden reports the Salmonella epidemic in nursing homes with dozens of patients

Salmonella was confirmed in two nursing homes in Sweden with 45 sick people.

The trace of infection is underway to find the source. The management of the incident includes Katrineholm officials and health and medical services in the Sörmland region.

Two nursing homes are involved and the staff have been tested, the results not yet confirmed.

Four people died during the epidemic, but three deaths came from other causes. A deceased person had a confirmed infection in Salmonella, but it is not certain that it was the cause of death.

Malin Enarsson, doctor of control of infectious diseases in Sörmland, said that several people have reported a stomach -related disease.

“We are aware of an epidemic of diarrheal diseases in nursing homes in Katrineholm. We expect other test results to confirm the source of infection. The infectious disease control service cooperates with the municipality’s food inspector and managers of nursing homes to investigate the cause, “said Enarsson.

The sampling results are awaiting the type of salmonella involved. This will show whether the epidemic is linked to a national Swedish salmonella epidemic linked to eggs.

National Salmonella and Campylobacter updates
In the national incident, 17 people from seven regions fell ill with a variant of Salmonella Enteritidis. This is up seven people in four regions.

The genetic comparisons of patients of patients with isolates from the Pongent Poule farm where salmonella was found in August showed that it is the same type of salmonella.

Interviews with patients also strengthened the link with the eggs that were recalled at the end of August. AXFOOD, ICA, LIDL and KRONägg have issued reminders in Sweden. The affected eggs are stamped with the 2SE684-35 and SE007 code on the packaging. Some packs have the best before the dates until September 11, 2025.

Finally, the number of people infected by Campylobacter has decreased in recent weeks.

From two weeks covering the middle at the end of August, 117 and 101 cases were reported. In the previous four weeks, there were between 169 and 203 cases per week.

A decrease towards the end of summer is expected. The prevalence of Campylobacter in flesh of flesh has also decreased during the same period.
