Romario Shepherd creates history! Becomes only 2nd West Indies player to score T20I hat-trick

Romario Shepherd, 30, an all-rounder of the West Indies national cricket team, created history with his bowling performance in the third T20I against the Bangladesh national cricket team.

The third T20I between West Indies and Bangladesh was hosted by Bir Sreshtho Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman Stadium in Chattogram on Friday (October 31).

Romario Shepherd becomes second West Indian player to take a hat-trick in men’s T20Is

Over the years, the West Indies have produced some legendary T20 cricketers, including batters, bowlers and all-rounders who fall into the category of ‘Greatest of All Time’.

However, these T20 cricketers have not always served the West Indies national cricket team for a long time, wearing the maroon jersey in the T20 Internationals.

Several Caribbean bowlers have taken a T20 hat-trick, but in T20 Internationals, Jason Holder was for a long time the only West Indian to have a hat-trick to his name. He scored a hat-trick against England in 2022.

However, Jason Holder now has company as Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) star all-rounder Romario Shepherd scored a stunning hat-trick against Bangladesh to create history. He dismissed Nurul Hasan, Tanzid Hasan and Shoriful Islam to achieve this feat.

After being asked to bowl first in the match, the West Indies bowling unit did an excellent job with Shepherd being the chief architect. He picked up his first wicket on the sixth ball of the 17th over, dismissing Nurul Hasan for 1.

Then, he returned to bowl the 20th over, and on the first ball itself, he dismissed Tanzid Hasan for 89. On the very next ball of the over, he castled Shoriful Islam for a golden duck to complete his hat-trick.

It feels good to finally join this club – Romario Shepherd

Speaking during the mid-inning break, Shepherd said he was completely unaware he was on a hat-trick until he reached the landmark. He clarified:

“I didn’t really know I was on a hat-trick until I got the hat-trick, I was more focused on closing out the innings. Jason came out and told me it was a hat-trick and told me to go for four wickets in four balls.

“(To score the hat-trick by knocking down the batter’s stumps) When you are a young fast bowler you watch others knock down the stumps and you dream of doing the same. It feels good to finally join this club. It’s a total chase but we don’t know how cricket goes, last time we defended 150 so you never know. Hopefully we can turn things around this time, with the team batting first.”
