Rohl must abandon Rangers flop that ‘deserves as much criticism as Antman’

Glasgow Rangers head coach Danny Rohl will look to engineer their first ever victory in European football against Ferencvaros in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

After a 3-0 win over Kilmarnock at Ibrox in the Scottish Premiership on Wednesday evening, the German boss will be hoping his players are full of confidence and ready to secure that first win of the league stage.

Several players will need to raise their level, however, as too many members of the team have failed to perform on the European stage this season.

Rangers’ worst players in the Europa League this season

When looking at Gers’ worst players in the Europa League, it’s impossible to consider Mohamed Diomande the standout player for the wrong reasons.

The Ivory Coast central midfielder has been sent off twice in three appearances in the competition, which is remarkable, and it’s hard to do worse than that.

Youssef Chermiti, who was signed for £8million from Everton, however, challenged Diomande for that place, with no goals and four missed “big chances” in five starts, according to Sofascore, in the league stage.

Summer signings Thelo Aasgaard and Oliver Antman also rank among the five worst players, as they failed to deliver a goal or assist and both averaged less than one key pass per game, according to WhoScored.

The attacking duo have also struggled in the Premiership, with one goal and two assists combined, but they are not the only attacking players to have underperformed, as Djeidi Gassama is set to be ruled out for Thursday’s game.

Why Djeidi Gassama should be abandoned by Danny Rohl

The summer signing from Sheffield Wednesday made an electric start to his career at Ibrox with four goals in six games in the Champions League qualifiers.

Since then, however, the French striker has struggled to make a regular impact, with one goal in 15 Premiership games and one goal in five Europa League outings, according to Sofascore.

Late last month, Rangers fan and scout Kai Watson said Gassama “deserves as much criticism as Antman and Aasgaard”, which is a fair comment considering their respective performances in the Premiership.

As mentioned above, the Frenchman hasn’t brought much quality in the league for the Gers, and he blanked again in the 3-0 win over Kilmarnock, with no goals, assists or “big chances” created, according to Sofascore. He also lost the ball 23 times.

As you can see in the table above, Aasgaard and Antman’s combined performance in the Premiership is better than Gassama’s, showing that he has not been at a higher level than the pair this season in the Championship.

These statistics show that these three summer signings have failed to provide goals and assists on a regular basis for the Light Blues, and this is also reflected in their combined return of one goal and no assists in the Europa League.

With this in mind, Rohl should ruthlessly leave Gassama out of the starting line-up for Thursday night’s clash against Ferencvaros as he failed to offer enough quality in the final third.

Instead, the former Sheffield Wednesday manager is expected to bring Mikey Moore back into the fold after marking his return from injury with an impressive goal against Kilmarnock.

The Spurs loanee has scored two goals in his last two appearances for Rangers, and it would have been three had VAR not ruled out his second goal against Killie for a trivial foul in the build-up.

Moore is starting to show he can make the difference in the final third, with two goals and an assist in the league, and should be given the opportunity to shine from the start against Gassama on Thursday.
