Rohit Sharma began the series under scrutiny after losing the India ODI captaincy to Shubman Gill, with questions being raised over his place in the team. The right-handed hitter scored just eight runs in the opener.

However, he returned to form in the second match, scoring 73 runs off 97 balls. The 38-year-old then smashed a century in the last ODI match. He scored his 33rd ODI century at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday 25 October.

Rohit scored an unbeaten 121 runs off 125 deliveries, with the help of 13 fours and three sixes. The team achieved the target of 237 runs with nine wickets and 69 balls to spare. However, Shubman Gill’s team lost the series by a margin of 1-2.

In the third ODI, Australia batted first after winning the toss. Matt Renshaw scored 56 from 58 balls and captain Mitchell Marsh added 41 from 50 deliveries. The hosts were bowled out for 236 in 46.4 overs. Harshit Rana was the pick of the bowlers for India, taking 4 wickets for 39 runs.

Rohit and Virat Kohli added a partnership of 168 for the second wicket. Kohli, who registered back-to-back ducks earlier in the series, scored an unbeaten 74 off 81 balls.

Rohit hit nine ODI centuries against Australia, equaling Sachin Tendulkar’s record. He finished the three-game series as the top scorer with 202 points. The former skipper won the Player of the Match and Player of the Series titles for his outstanding performances.

India’s next ODI mission against South Africa will take place at home in November-December. The Men in Blue will face the Proteas in the first ODI of the three-match series in Ranchi on Sunday, November 30.
